Recorded direct to DSD by Gus Skinas
Recorded directly to DSD at Immersive Studios in Boulder, Colorado by Gus Skinas of Sony, this disc captures the live arrangements and performances of a group of superb musicians as a multichannel project. David Elias is an independent singer/songwriter recognized worldwide for his ability to produce high-impact material, both sonically and lyrically, using sparse acoustic arrangements. The Window is the culmination of these previous efforts and captures the ambient qualities of superior songs recorded with superior musicians using today's highest resolution recording and mastering technologies. Three songs from this disc went immediately to the top three spots #1, #2, and #3 on the Global Songwriter chart hosted by BeSonic.com. The music is very warm, rich and natural and includes guitar, harmonica, mandolin and accordion. Highly recommended.
Heartfelt. Heartland. Heartbreak. Honesty. Simplicity. True blue. Sure as an arrow. Right as rain. The real deal. These words and phrases rushed through my head as I listened to this disc. David Elias sings in a voice somewhat reminiscent of Eric Andersen's, and writes beautiful songs devoid of anything false -- his sincerity as writer and singer shines quietly through. He is backed by some wonderfully subtle virtuoso musicians on dobro, lap steel, mandolin, guitars, drums, double bass, harmonica, accordion, and keyboards. In this age of sound bites and political mudslinging, Elias's music is refreshing. He doesn't hit you over the head with it, but seems to say: "Come in, sit a while, and listen. Be at peace within yourself and with everyone else."
In tune with Elias's musical approach is the honest recording. He recorded in live takes, without overdubs or splices. What you hear is what they got, and how wonderful it is. The sound is so natural, especially in the multichannel mixes, that I could swear the performers were right there in my listening room. The Window joins the exalted ranks of John McEuen's Nitty Gritty Surround and Jorma Kaukonen's Blue Country Heart as one of the best examples out there of acoustic high-resolution recording.
“In addition, I award David Elias a 2005 Brutus Award for the brilliant work that he’s done with DSD in 2003 and 2005 on his exceptional recordings, The Window and The Crossing. If you haven’t treated yourself to these two exceptional recordings, you’re missing what DSD can do with well recorded sources. Not only that, but David writes terrific music!…Gus Skinas of the Super Audio Center is given a 2005 Brutus for the superlative engineering that he has done in DSD on a number of projects. Gus combines remarkable production values with a clear sense of the importance of DSD as a format. Gus deserves recognition as an audio engineer who really gets it – congratulations, Gus!” – David W.
