John Mayall is a bona-fide blues legend, the British blues-rock pioneer influencing several generations of subsequent musicians, from the Yardbirds and the Rolling Stones to the Strypes and the White Stripes. As a bandleader, he's had a good eye for talent, whether it be guitarists like Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Harvey Mandel, among many others, or rhythm players like Keef Hartley, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood (the latter two of which would go on to form a little band called Fleetwood Mac with guitarist Green).

Although he's not nearly the household name he should be in the United States, Mayall's contributions to blues and rock music are numerous, his flirtations with blues and jazz-fusion and R&B groundbreaking in scope and influence, writes Rev. Keith Gordon for About.com.

A Special Life, Mayall's first studio album in five years and the follow-up to the late-career triumph that was 2009's Tough, is more than just a mere "return to form" for the British blues statesman, but rather an album as insightful, entertaining, and as musically strong as any of the other records he's released prior. With a fine-tuned and road-tested band that includes guitarist Rocky Athas, bassist Greg Rzab, and drummer Jay Davenport, as well as studio guest C.J. Chenier (son of Louisiana zydeco legend Clifton Chenier), Mayall celebrates the blues with the same reckless energy he had 40 or 50 years ago.
