Bradford Alexander Mehldau is an American jazz pianist, composer and arranger. He studied music at the New School and was a member of Joshua Redman's quartet in the mid-1990s, and has led his own trio since the early 1990s. Since the early 2000s Mehldau has incorporated other musical formats — pop, rock and classical music, including German Romanticism — into his writing and playing and has played with many renowned artists.

Mehldau won Down Beat's Readers Poll piano award in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2011 and 2012. He was the 2006 winner of the Miles Davis Prize awarded by the Montreal International Jazz Festival. He has been nominated for several Grammy Awards including Best Jazz Instrument Solo on "Blame it On My Youth" from the Art of the Trio Volume One in 1998, Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group for Art of the Trio: 4 Back at the Vanguard in 2000, Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group for Brad Mehldau Trio Live in 2009, Best Improvised Jazz Solo for the title track of Ode in 2013, and Best Improvised Jazz Solo for "Sleeping Giant" from Mehliana: Taming the Dragon in 2015.

Mehldau's debut album for Nonesuch was a solo piano performance recorded live at Sumida Triphony Hall in Tokyo on February 15, 2003 and released in September of 2004. The album received universally favorable reviews. AllMusic awarded the album 4 ½ stars and called it an "intense, cerebral, and beautiful album." On All About Jazz, Doug Collete noted, "Mehldau plays beautifully on his own, his work is florid with detail, yet never just flowery. There is a deeply felt passion in all he plays, and that's exactly why he is so engrossing to hear...he runs the gamut of emotion in his playing." JazzTimes reviewer, Harvey Siders commented "Few pianists can match Brad Mehldau when it comes to cross-fertilizing jazz, classical and rock. The same applies for technique, taste and intellectual curiosity."

For the 15th anniversary of the album, Run Out Groove in conjunction with Nonesuch Records is releasing Live In Tokyo on vinyl for the first time and including the full set, that features tracks making their debut in the U.S. on any format for the first time.
