In 1959 a former amateur boxer started a record label out of his home in Detroit, Michigan. Employing the colors yellow and black and open to releasing any genre that could become a hit, Tamla Records and Berry Gordy laid the foundation for what would become a global empire.
Released on Black Friday (November 27, 2015), Third Man Records has reissued nine 45s in an ongoing series tracing the early days of Motown. Included in the initial bunch is a bit of doo-wop, R&B instrumentals, surf instrumentals, and vocal R&B packaged in reproduction Tamla sleeves and label design.
