All Wrongs Righted! GRAB this while you can!

Posted Thursday, June 16, 2022 by Dace Gisclard I gave the Australian Eloquence CD's of the Albeniz and Ravel a rave review on AMAZON, only to be dismayed when another reviewer pointed out that the stereo channels of the tracks played by the Paris Conservatoire were REVERSED! Thankfully, that problem has been corrected here, and the remastered sound is terrific. The only remaining fly in the ointment is that these Analogue Productions SACD's retain the incorrect ordering of the movements as it was on the RCA LP's--a relatively minor issue--that's what the programming feature is for!

The flawed Eloquence CD's have been discontinued, and are now (6/16/22) selling for astronomical prices. An inquiry to Eloquence yielded the information that their set is OOP, and they have no intention of issuing corrected copies. At present, this AP set is a collector's best bet for this much-sought-after legendary recording, and is likely to remain so. GRAB it while the price is still reasonable.

Posted Saturday, February 19, 2022 by John F. in MD Very nice job by Analogue Productions. This GOLD CD is big, bold, dynamic, and melodic. Solid performance and sonics. 4 stars as some of my 5 star reference CD's are: Janis Ian's Breaking Silence (Analogue Productions GOLD); Shawn Colvin's Steady On debut and Tracy Chapman's debut aluminum CD's.

Misfire

Posted Monday, June 8, 2020 by Anonymous Went off the rails here, hate to say about one of my favorite labels. I learned to play all 3 to 4 parts with chords on piano when young for these pieces; knowing the notes well. Jarring notes of really screwy tunings made this one unlistenable and I tried playing on separate days 2 weeks apart in case it was just a bad day, no luck.

Major Disappointment

2 Stars
Posted Wednesday, December 21, 2016 by David W Munch, BSO, Zamkochian all brilliant. Recording is not. Strings are shrill and lack definition. Overall there is no depth or warmth. Seems like many parts of the recording were highly oversaturated and could not be rescued by this remaster. Sections that are mezzopiano or mezzo forte actually sound quite good, furthering the disappointment in those sections that are louder, Quite a shame especially when compared with the Living Stereo recording of Reiner - Alexander Nevsky from just one year later, a recording with elegant balance, tone and accuracy. Get this one for the historical performance but don't expect to be wowed by the acoustics. You won't be. A real shame.

Another preview

Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2014 by Richard Schneider This is one of only two orchestra/choral recordings made with Reiner and the CSO during the Living Stereo era, the other was Beethoven's 9th and each one featured the newly formed Chicago Symphony Chorus. Neither one has had the full-on audiophile treatment, so the planned summer release of Nevsky on vinyl and SACD will be a very special audiophile debut. RCA's original vinyl issue was quite good for it's time, decent quality surfaces, with convincing lively dynamics. The miking managed to capture the daunting orchestral array, the width and depth of the chorus, and a feel for the venue. Great natural presence - nothing "in your face." The Reiner Beethoven 9th would be equally deserving of the audiophile treatment, a magnificent performance in a very natural production, notable for the solo vocal quartet, a perfect non-diva ensemble heard not up front, but from the chorus. Let this not fall through the cracks of recording history.

PREview not a REview

Posted Friday, June 13, 2014 by Richard Schneider For some, the most iconic of the Reiner Living Stereo series, has had multiple iterations on independent audiophile vinyl, but never made the cut for RCA's own SACD series, despite many requests. So now SACD fans will have a chance to hear these amazing performances. By the way, has anyone considered Hovhaness/Stravinsky Mysterious Mountain/Fairy's Kiss? That happens to be the only purely orchestral Reiner/CSO recording to remain active in the full-price Red Seal catalog and never downgraded to mid-price through to the end of RCA's lp era. Must be a reason for that. And it did well when issued on CD. It's time for this classic to get the full bore audiophile treatment on vinyl and SACD.

Various Artists - Mercury Living Presence Collector's Edition Box Set Product No: ADEC 83190

A superb followup to Volume 1

5 Stars
Posted Wednesday, June 12, 2013 by Jonathan This set is the second 6-lp reissue of selected Mercury Living Presence recordings, the initial volume having been released during 2012. The original 2012 set was superb and this followup set is every bit as good as the original. Pressings are uniformly excellent, the sound is clear and well-defined and the transfers to vinyl have obviously been performed with a great deal of care and expertise. An excellent booklet is included which contains a number of interesting photographs I have not seen published anywhere else.

I certainly will not hestitate to purchase any further volumes in this series, but I would hope that the Mercury recordings of Henryk Szeryng are given further consideration, since apart from the Brahms Concerto in Volume 1, so far as I am aware none of his Mercury recordings have ever been reissued onto LP in the "modern" era of audiophile LP reissues.

Posted Thursday, April 4, 2013 by Arturo Castaneda This is a real bargain. Excellent EMI recording, first class pressing by RTI at $10.00! What are you waiting for to buy it? Get one, you'll be glad. Just one question, why is a damaged one selling for $20.00 and the undamaged ones sell for half that price?

Great LP of Modern Music

4 Stars
Posted Tuesday, March 13, 2012 by Triodeotl If you liked the Speakers Corner re-issue of "Ionization" on Decca. You will definately want to add this to your collection. Modern but accessable with lots of percussion and horns calling. Wonderful great sound that does not disapoint. The chances of finding an original of this are next to nil.

My copy was totally quiet and the pressing was totally flat. What are you waiting for the cover alone is worth the price of admission. In case you are wondering I am recommending you get it now before it sells out and goes out of print. Or worse yet it gets on one of those lists like the one that I am drawing up to post on the web and then what. The price will skyrocket overnight.

Or just wait until Harry Pearson hears it, then what? I highly recommend this LP for the sound and the music. Don't miss it or you'll be sorry. +++++

Stunning

5 Stars
Posted Friday, January 27, 2012 by Triodeotl LP's do not get better than this musically and sonically. This is fun music at the very best with substance. Britten is the best British composer of our century.

Unbelievable recording from Capitol. I mean who would have thought? Its right up there with anything I have heard. A sonic knockout in everyway and deserves a place on the TAS List or anyones list for that matter.

This LP is reason to start your own list so put it on it right now. A masterpiece - - Recommended! +++++

Posted Saturday, June 26, 2010 by Anonymous I find Classic Records remastering of these original Everest releases a waste of time and our money. The remastering almost always sound far superior to the original pressings which consistently sounded terrible 35 mm or not. I have almost all the original early pressings. The reissue if flat and defect free. The concerto itself is not my favorite piano concerto but it can be exciting if not beautiful. If you can find the London or Decca performance by Alicia De Larrocha with the London Philharmonic with de Bergos CS6818 get it. A great recording and much better performance. Classic to me do the best job of remastering older recordings especially if the pressing are free of defects but I wish they would try and get their hands on the Decca-London catalogue instead of wasting their skills on Everest.

Buyer beware

5 Stars
Posted Sunday, December 20, 2009 by Arturo Castaneda. The original pressing is outstanding, fabulous performance, incredible dynamic range and fidelity. However, a second copy purchased two years later was a fraud. No dynamics, a flimsy record and poor sound. There is no indication on the cover to warn the buyer that the record inside is not made from the direct matrix, but from a very poor tape recording. I recently dumped my second lousy copy to a second hand record store. The same happened when I bought a Harry James Sheffield suposedly "direct to disc".
