Posted Friday, December 17, 2021 by Joe I have a green vinyl pressing of this LP, and I think the mastering is much better on this one. More natural sounding and more balanced. Dead quiet vinyl, too. Plus, it's housed in a replica of the original cover, with tip on artwork and nice, heavy cardboard.

Not many jazz artists did them however but this strikes me as one of the best all around I've heard. This 'new' discovery for me - both artist and album - is highly recommendable to both the curious and non-jazz fan alike. Since it is in a jazz format, one can get away with playing it all year round before others catch up to what you are listening to. If interested, don't hesitate. Great sound, silent pressing.

Posted Wednesday, October 6, 2021 by green_shag_rug As soon as I put the stylus down, I was shocked by the static/surface noise at the beginning of the record. I tried my electrostatic gun, my Boundless brush, a gentle cleaning, but no luck.So I just cranked it up to drown out the surface noise. I do have a brand new VM540 cartridge, and everything else I've been spinning sounds great. It's sad. The recording is excellent. And I believe this is one of the most important jazz albums of all time, because it was my first exposure to jazz as a little kid and probably one reason why I eventually became a jazz lover. Noise did get a little better further into side A. And side B isn't as bad. Also, to be clear, this recording does have some hiss-like sound and drum brushing. The surface noise I hear is not that. So it gets a 5 for the recording and a 1 for the pressing.

Superb mastering; sub-par vinyl

Posted Wednesday, January 6, 2016 by RCG The pressing quality of this record is not as bad as my copy of Whipped Cream, which suffered a very wavy surface and hazy looking vinyl, symptoms of an overheated vinyl biscuit. Here again, we have wavy vinyl, and the slight haze. This time, the playback is mostly acceptable but still, two different titles pressed at the same plant with the same sloppy press operators? Not good.

I and anyone else buying vinyl would gladly pay an extra $2 to have RTI, QRP, Pallas, etc. press these competently. And, to get something other than the thinnest paper sleeve I've ever seen.

And this is a shame. Bernie Grundman's mastering is once again superb, allowing me to hear details in this lifelong favorite which I have never heard before. The music is a nice change, Alpert's arrangements upending the tiredold Christmas songs to create something unique. Musically, I highly recommend it. Otherwise, be prepared for disappointing pressings on this and other Herb Alpert Presents titles.

Posted Friday, December 25, 2009 by Anonymous I have an original 1957 pressing, a 1958 and 1963 re-issue, and one of the early Camden copies (along with a few digital CD remasters), but this is the best sounding version so far! Close to the 1957 original in sound, but more depth in the vocal than I have heard before. An A+
