Astonishing

Posted Monday, March 25, 2024 by James Quite possibly the best SACD I have heard so far, and I have dozens of them. Right from the start, the music jumps out of the speakers. Every drum hit is sharp and precise, the backing vocals have remarkable presence, the bass is clean and not boomy. The whole recording sounds alive. I do not have expensive gear. I am playing the DSD layer from a Sony Blu-ray player over HDMI feeding a Yamaha receiver. I will likely buy the entire SD series eventually. If you're even thinking about it, go for it. You won't regret it.

In addition to all the fine detail of the instruments, you really feel like you are at the concert! While Sarah sounds great, it's not only about her voice with this SACD.

To be honest I find rock releases hit and miss on SACD and tend to buy more Jazz in the format but I have really enjoyed the mastering on APO titles. Well they didn't let me down. This is an excellent recording! I must of played Machine Gun (the song) ten times last night. This disc has such full sound it was like almost being there, the bass is warm and the highs are not too bright. Perfectly balanced mastering. I really hope they will release more of his music on SACD. I tend to lean towards MoFi for rock releases but APO has hit this one out of the park (they did an excellent job with the Beach Boys as well). I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this SACD. Now can they get the licences for the Traffic albums because they were made for high res and the flat transfer of John Barleycorn from Japan just didn't cut it!

Posted Thursday, February 28, 2013 by Mark Wita I've purchased essentially every iteration of The Doors catalog on CD, DVD-A, DCC CD, vinyl boxed set, 45 RPM vinyl etc. I was skeptical of this SACD boxed set since it was "upsampled" from the same files used to make my Perception DVD-A boxed set. So I opened the Infinite SACD box and first played The Doors ST on my Oppo BDP-93 set to 5.1 surround sound with DSD bitstream output over HDMI. I was shocked when it didn't sound good. It sounded bad in fact. I also noticed that there was no sound coming from the surround speakers. I checked all my settings and everything was right. So I whipped out The Doors DVD-A Perception box disc and played The Doors ST in the same player. The surround channels were pumping out the sound like night and day compared to the SACD. So I moved on and tried the 5 other SACDs. All 5 have significant content in the surround channels. I went back to the self titled SACD and nada, no surround. So in summary there seems to be a defect with The Doors self titled.

Posted Friday, November 30, 2012 by adrian naunton A brilliant release on sacd. You wait years for some elvis on sacd and then 3 of them come along! Elvis at this stage in his career had an amazing vocal range and it really shines on this disc. These songs were very well recorded back in the day with top flight equipment and it shows. Every track on this disc is brimming with energy. The soundstage is very wide. This release even manages to out class the japanese paper sleeve version and the shm-cd by a wide margin. Had elvis not spent most of the 60s in hollywood who knows what music he would have produced. This album stands the passing of time very well indeed, a bonafide classic!

Posted Friday, November 30, 2012 by adrian naunton Its been a very long wait for some elvis on sacd! This disc is frankly spectacular and sounds better than any previous digital release for sure. It was a real joy to listen to such a beautiful clear sound. Tracks such as "love me" sounded like elvis was in the room. All the tracks revealed so many little details i have never heard before. For me "in the ghetto" was a revelation as i have always thought it sounded a bit muddy, not so here as it sounded more alive than i would have thought possible. Fingers crossed for many more elvis releases this good!
