Jascha Heifetz, Charles Munch, & Boston Symphony Orchestra - Beethoven: Violin Concerto (in D) Product No: AAPC 1992-45

Very disappointed with the pressing

2 Stars
Posted Sunday, March 8, 2026 by Anonymous I was really looking forward to this new pressing with 180 gram & 45 rpm. I actually have a copy of my dad's original mono LP from RCA Victor LM-1992.

As soon as I received the new copy I put it on the turntable & enjoyed tremendously the clean sounding reproduction, & of course Heifetz's beautiful playing. Unfortunately, the song faded out early on both First & Second movement before the ending of side 1 & side 3. I totally understands because of the 45 rpm each side can not store the same amount of data as compared to a 33-1/3 version, but to fading out without any warning is just not acceptable. Especially, with the amount that they are charging.

BTW, I have all 7 copies of the Steely Dan 200g, 45 rpm UHQR LP & none of them have the same problem.

Again, very disappointed with this purchase.

Dream or nightmare?

5 Stars
Posted Thursday, August 21, 2025 by Gordon Johnson There is insufficient space afforded here for any thing like a justifiable review so I'll keep is short n sweet. Roger Pines, "A set to dream about". Gordon Johnson, " A set to have nightmares about if you miss the chance to own a copy". Biggest (only?) downside to this set are the lack of anti static inners, so expect a static battle.

Superb and cool!

5 Stars
Posted Thursday, May 22, 2025 by Wised To fans of electronic music this album is a seminal work. As cool and quirky as in 1969! The clear psychodelic vinyl is a treasure. The pressing is superb, silent background and superb fidelity. A must have for lovers of this genre!

Mozart’s boldest piece!

5 Stars
Posted Wednesday, April 30, 2025 by Terry The solo voices are wonderfully recorded. The chorus is a bit forward, not allowing the proper blend or warmth. And where is the orchestra? Good question. I found that if you crank your subwoofers up to double volume you get some occasional warmth from a piece that is supposed to be Mozart’s boldest composition. I gave it five stars because Chad will not otherwise print it.

Posted Sunday, March 24, 2024 by Chris They say that nothing is perfect; I say, if God has His hand in it, perfection is possible! "The Lark" is a true masterpiece and God placed in the mind of this composer and the hands of Jascha Heifetz a means to perfection! RTI did a great job on this one!

Lovely

5 Stars
Posted Sunday, January 29, 2023 by Ian C This is really nice album. First, the pressing is absolutely silent. I mean silent. I don't know who they used to press it, but I want to buy all my LPs there!

The music is of course, mostly Bach, and played in a slow, deliberate manner but beautiful.

The same label also put out a solo Bach cello LP which I'm also about to review (spoiler: 5 stars!)

Yeah...I own the 33rpm too, and have no regrets buying this

Posted Sunday, October 2, 2022 by David Scherzer How many copies of a single recording is too many? Like so many others, I've been enchanted by this work and this performance for a long time. Long enough to have purchased my fair share of formats of this exact recording. Over the years, to date, I've purchased the following versions of this recording: 1) JVC XRCD2, 2) Analogue Productions SACD, 3) Chesky 33rpm, 4) Analogue Productions 33rpm, 5) the Analogue Productions 45rpm reviewed here.

I'll save you some reading and just summarize here: This is the clearest, most dynamic, and most "present" version of this recording I've yet heard. Granted, I haven't heard the 1/4" reel to reel nor an original shaded dog. But I REALLY struggle to imagine a better sounding version than this will ever be pressed on vinyl again.

So do I have any regrets buying this as my 5th version of the same recording? Not in the least!

Fairly Quiet Pressing

4 Stars
Posted Thursday, October 7, 2021 by Brian VanPelt The pressing is at issue here. I ordered 2 of this album, and all 6 disks had visible surface issues. 2 of the disks have medium scratches, but all 6 disks have faint scratches throughout the entire sides of all 6 disks. My guess is these are the marks that happen when a record is produced conveyor-belt style, but I do not know the record business. These micro scratches are almost never audible, but there are more light clicks than should happen on a record that absolutely needs to be dead quiet. After all, this this music has only 1 violin as the only sound.

Another issue is something that might not bother those with headphones. On my stereo, I cannot locate, in space, where the sound of the violin is coming from - it is nebulous.

Overall, I'd say that the music is great, the recording is great - Perlman must have been in a cavernous room when he recorded this. The vinyl looks nasty up close, but is generally quiet.

Eiji Oue - Stravinsky: The Rite Of Spring Product No: AREF 1515

such promise, until the needle hits the groove

1 Stars
Posted Thursday, August 19, 2021 by scott baxter I had such hopes, but this is a very noisy record. Far too many pops and audible grit throughout both disks. I always wash a brand new record, and re-washing made no difference. The record was put through a degritter cleaner and it made no difference. I bought a second lp set and it sounded just the same. This is wasted money. I have a near 40 year old Antal Dorati/London Symphony recording by London Digital and it is so much more quiet.

Apart from the abysmal surface, this 'read' of the score is rather more relaxed than I think it should be, but we're now talking about matters of taste. Overall, it's too languid, lacking attack on certain passages that should literally shock the listener. Both the Bernstein and Dorati led recordings do a better job in this respect.

Overall I'd say this is a very problematic recording that had superb potential, but that is squandered by the rash of artifacts scattered across the surface of both disks.

All Digital Remasters

3 Stars
Posted Saturday, May 22, 2021 by Joseph Somsel There was no warning that all five of these discs are digital remasters - none are directly from the master tapes. One of the discs is not even of the original issue but of a rehearsal. Nice enough packaging though and the performances are exceptional and justly renowned.

That said they are clear and detailed but lack the analogue warmth and body I hoped for and expected.

For sound quality, I might have been better off buying the Testament reissue of the Elgar or even a clean, used "dog in postage stamp" LP.

Overall, a disappointing purchase.
