Explosive Drums

5 Stars
Posted Sunday, September 18, 2022 by Brian VanPelt The pressing is good, but not great (4 out of 5). The recording and mastering are epic though. The soundstage stretches top to bottom, right to left, and from front to back.

The most powerful instrument is the set of drums. This version of Animals has the most booming drums I've ever heard, and their is real viscerality in the sharper strikes. The organ does this wonderful job of painting the real wall from left to right and back again, slowly, during Dogs. The guitar is perfectly great, as usual, but isn't as big of a star as those other instruments. Waters' bass is very clear throughout.

As I listened, I could hear details I have not heard before. Little things, like a sound here or there. The vocals seem to jump out of the wall more than I can remember. Imaging is great and I could pick out all of the instruments even in a crowded song.

The visceral nature has given this version more emotion than I've felt before now. Grade 4.5 (because of the pressing).

Disappointing

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, November 27, 2021 by Steve I loved this album growing up, but the record I received is dumpster fodder. I don’t know if I got a bad copy, but it can make a nice hifi sound like a am radio.

This HAS TO be a 45RPM set

5 Stars
Posted Monday, September 13, 2021 by Richard I think this is my favorite by Ozzy.

BUT.... this has to be a 45RPM edition because there are no more tracks than the original LP (that I do own) and the songs are the same length.

Either that or this is an exceptional case of greed... which would NOT surprise me.... and which I DO expect from record companies these days.

The Definitive Pressing

5 Stars
Posted Tuesday, October 11, 2016 by audiofan Another flawless pressing from QRP - no surprise there. The sound is exceptional for a recording nearly 46 years old as well - this superb-sounding double LP presents the entire experience at last - and is as close as most of us will ever get to being there. Timeless and essential music on glorious vinyl - bravo, QRP!

No complaints here

4 Stars
Posted Saturday, July 16, 2016 by Anonymous I've read that a few people had some issues with this. My copy was flat, on-center and pretty much pop free. There was one song where the cymbals were a little spitty, but over all I'd say this sounds pretty darn good. In headphones it was excellent.

"Still Crazy..." Is Crazy Good

5 Stars
Posted Wednesday, July 6, 2016 by audiofan This Columbia/Legacy re-issue is 5-star reference quality, both in the remaster (as good as, perhaps even better than the original) as well as the quality of the vinyl/pressing. There literally was no hint of surface noise or defects (ticks, pops, etc), and the LP sounds spectacular. Highly recommended...and this applies to the other two previous LPs as well, which, after hearing "Still Crazy" I purchased as well. Kudo's to Columbia for going all out for these iconic titles and using the original analog tapes!

Value

4 Stars
Posted Monday, October 6, 2014 by Jeff C - Australia My original copy is dished so to play one side I need to tape it down in multiple places around the edge of the platter. So I figured at $20 (on special) this version would be worth the gamble. Vinyl is flat and quiet. The sound is almost as good as my original so it seems this has not been messed up by remastering or digital fiddling. Highs and mids have not been brightened and the bass is still very satisfying. Sound 9 out of 10

4.5

Posted Friday, September 26, 2014 by audiofan This disc, every track of which was previously made available on 'First Rays Of The New Rising Sun', is probably of interest only to those who either passed on that release, or, like me, grew up with this version, and want it on high-quality vinyl (not that the 'FROTNRS' pressing was inferior) with the original sequencing. This remaster does not appear to be different from 'FROTNRS', at least on my system. The overall sound is very good; however, the bass, which is quite deep & full on the beautiful track 'Drifting', seems to almost 'drop out' on others, at times making you feel as if you need engage the tone controls to boose the bass a bit. A direct A/B comparison with 'FROTNRS' reveals the same issue, so this is probably true to the master tape. All told, however, this does not detract too much from one's enjoyment of the disc. The artwork is beautifully reproduced, tho the cardboard itself seems a bit thinner than most. Another perfectly flat, quiet pressing from QRP.

Disappointed

3 Stars
Posted Tuesday, April 2, 2013 by Anonymous After buying the British Mono release I was disappointed with the almost 'muffled' feeling of the sound. On the other hand, Axis Mono sounded great. Alas, this is closer to the British release and I can't really recommend it.

Why mono?

3 Stars
Posted Saturday, December 15, 2012 by Anonymous This recording has such great stereo hall ambience that I can't imagine what the attraction of a mono edition would be other than collectibility. I mean c'mon, by 1968 we were pretty much out of the mono era so just what is the point??

Legacy does it Again

5 Stars
Posted Sunday, July 22, 2012 by John P. M. Ive bought some duds from audiophile labels, but this is mastered to perfection, without all the hype about who mastered the record and what tapes they used, legacy doesnt disappoint... again!

Maybe 4-1/2 Stars

4 Stars
Posted Thursday, May 19, 2011 by audiofan This gorgeously performed, produced, and recorded album is a testament to the talent lost in Jeff Buckley. This pressing, or my copy, was quiet, but nonetheless held a few stubborn ticks and pops that refuse to let go...not enough to ruin the experience, mind you, but just enough to remind you, every other song or so, that you're listening to vinyl. Sure I'd like a "perfect" copy - that would make it "5-stars" with ease - but the sonic's overall warmth overshadows the small imperfections and I'm too busy enjoying the music.

Enjoyable Listen.

5 Stars
Posted Thursday, April 1, 2010 by Anonymous I don't have the original LP releases, so I can't comment on a comparison... but I found this to be a very enjoyable listening experience. Large sound stage... fairly well balanced... and much better sounding than the CD remaster that I own.

Superb!

5 Stars
Posted Thursday, March 11, 2010 by jonathan I no longer have an original copy to compare. My only other is Classic's outstanding mono reissue, and this one gives it a run for the money. They are different, yet equally seductive for their own virtues. This version has amazing dynamic range, a huge sound stage and is perhaps a bit brighter or 'hotter' than the Classic mono. The mono strikes me as slightly more lush, natural and 'organic' sounding. I will cherish them both in my collection. And such a great price point for a truly audiophile product!
