Sounds as good as I had hoped for. The remaster is fantastic. Great wide soundstage. Great top end. Detailed midrange and punchy base. Hearing things you never could on the cd. So excited to to have it in the collection finally.

Posted Sunday, April 30, 2023 by Gordon Johnson I own this pressing from first issue and wanted to check if the B side had been recut due to the digital error edit in Purple Haze so picked another copy up. Unfortunately it has not been corrected and spoils what is not just a brilliant album but a mighty fine mastered and pressed record. Jimi and the band are having so much fun here and it comes across in this recording. I do think it would be worth getting a better edited side B and re-cutting / pressing. For obvious reason I can't rate this at 5 stars.

Arrangements are gorgeous setting up a jarring contrast of smooth strings and glistening brass against the painful to hear voice of Lady Day. More an artifact of history than an entertainment, this belongs in every Holiday fan's collection.

Very Clean and Smooth

There are essentially no surface noises to speak of - aside from the occasional light click here and there. There is nothing especially expensive about this record, but the vinyl sounds as good as any I've heard.

If that's not enough, the music is almost perfectly presented. For example, during the Ain't No Sunshine song, it starts off with Withers' voice centered/high, with only a guitar for a little bit, but then the rest of the band floods the room, and the transition feels like a warm flood. That describes much of the album. The soundstage is wide and 3D - the instruments are in the left/right forground, while Withers' voice is centered further back. Some other instruments fill the space from left-to-right.

This has got to be one of those albums you can use to relax after a hard day. The sound is topnotch, the record mostly clean and quiet, and it's not priced like an audiophile special.

Cut to vinyl at Alchemy by Barry Grint ("Bazza" in the run-out wax), the sound is stunning in every way. Highly recommended.

The vinyl is (on my copy) totally quiet & flat, with jet-black backgrounds and a total lack of surface noise. I have compared the LP against the original CD, and the vinyl seems to present a slightly wider soundstage with better localization and placement of the instruments/voices. If you are a fan of this recording, this 2018 reissue is the best way to experience 'Medusa'.

Posted Thursday, January 8, 2015 by Rudy / Record Collector Guide I grew up with this album in the house, in all its scratched up mono glory, so it was nice to see Sony finally reissue this title properly. All I've had is the late 80s reissue on CD (its first) which is rather bright and lifeless. Cut by Kevin Gray and pressed on pink vinyl, this album comes across well with a full-bodied response, and the typical stereo spread of the mid 60s. On this, I am hearing more detail than I've heard on any digital version thus far. The vinyl surface is relatively free of minor ticks and clicks but, like all colored or clear vinyl I own, there is a higher background noise floor, like a faint constant "swishing" noise. Not distracting though. I am tempted to get a spare copy on black vinyl just to have it. I don't know how the more recent remastering by Analogue Productions might improve on this one; I'll wait to see and do a comparison. On these Dynagroove titles, it boils down to which source tapes are used.

The overdrive that Jimi uses often causes a lot of digital glare that gets noisy and fatigues your ears- not so with this gem. The fluid, organic, genius nature of his ability come flowing naturally out of your speakers and into your ears. Though digital mastering is getting much better, this shows that a good master tape can provide a better end product with superior analogue transfer and pressing.
