Posted Friday, December 16, 2022 by Stephen DeWolfe I had this on vinyl years ago, loved it. I have now acquired a 1/2 track Studer A807. I felt that I would take the plunge and try this tape. This tape is so much better than I remember. The dynamics are outstanding, with very clear upper range. I swear I can here a differences in the instruments I never heard on vinyl. It was nice the set back and just get lost in the music and the performance. I feel that it was money well spent.

Ballads is the album where Coltrane reins in his “sheets of sound” and plays in a more melodic style. Previously, this was low on my Coltrane list until I heard this tape. While AP’s recent vinyl reissue was stellar, this tape moves it up several levels. If you have seen the movie Vanilla Sky where Coltrane appears as a Hologram at a party, well this is a hologram for your ears. This puts you in the studio. Don’t miss out grab it now.

Why are you reading this rather than clicking on the buy button? One of the most influential albums in jazz is being made available to you from the safety copy, in sound that was only previously imagined. As they say you snooze you lose.

I feel sorry for a distinguished reviewer the self proclaimed king of vinyl who can only question the validity of tape but doesn’t participate in it. For a fraction of the price touted for one of his analog setup’s he could experience these on his own system.

Beautifully done, keep em’ coming. Maybe Mingus next?

Good recording but!

Posted Wednesday, January 19, 2022 by Pearse I enjoyed this recording but I feel it is let down by the piano being heavily shifted to the left channel, that is apart from the last track where Bill Evans really shines with a solo turn with good center imaging and dynamics. Its such a shame when the soundstage is poorly presented, it would have been a 5 for me if Bill Evans piano was centered for this recording.
