If this was the first SACD I was exposed to honestly I'd be a tad disappointed. It does sound good, but not really altogether different than redbook.

Posted Wednesday, May 13, 2020 by Anonymous This is a fantastic listening experience. If you are a fan of Holst: The Planets and have an SACD player, buy this now! The extreme audio dynamics of this piece (ex: brass stinging notes loudly) exploits DSD/SACD capability of fully resolving the audio better than most classical music. This is a great disc to demonstrate the comparison of vinyl, reel to reel, and CD vs DSD/SACD. Vinyl, reel to reel, and CD are dead! Long live the new king, DSD/SACD!

Posted Tuesday, May 24, 2011 by Muzza I have two different versions of The Four Seasons and now this one. In a less than perfect room and in 2x channel mode I was blown away by the sound. The bite of the bows, the depth of the sound stage, the ambience of the hall, but most of all the recording allowed me to hear for the first time the real interplay between the musicians and their instruments.

I was blown away.

Posted Tuesday, January 19, 2010 by Adam Relatively random selection of music, but I guess that's to be expected from a demo disk. Because of this, I only find myself listening to it occasionally. Sound quality is phenomenal. The recordings are great for testing your system's ability to accurately reproduce the natural timbre of many types of classical acoustic instruments. The only reason this doesn't get a four from me is because of the fact that I don't find myself listening to it often. I don't return to it because I crave the melodies. It gets a full four because it delivers what it promises; reference quality recordings.

Sparkling Mozart in Surround Sound

Posted Sunday, March 16, 2008 by XIC It is without question that the music on this recording is some of the most sublime in the classical music world, so a review in this case need only address sound and performance, both of which are truly excellent.

Using DSD technology, the SACD multichannel layer gives you a very realistic sound space, where you can almost visualize being inside the hall where it was recorded. The center, surround left and surround right speakers are used mostly for ambient, reverberant sound. While I normally prefer to hear the center speaker used as part of the orchestral soundstage, the feeling of natural hall acoustics that this recording gives makes up for that and works quite nicely.

As with all Hybrid SACDs, there is a multichannel and stereo SACD layer, and as a bonus, the regular CD layer is in HDCD, if your system can reproduce that. If not, it will read as a normal CD.

With four Mozart symphonies played tightly with enthusiasm and energy, this set is truly outstanding.

Posted Friday, June 22, 2007 by Rich L. What clarity on the vocals and horns! The Hallelujah Chorus on the 2nd disc is pure joy. Album as a whole is a tour-de-force, both in performance and recording excellence. Would make a great demo disc for SACD, it's that good.
