Fantastic performance and excellent (for EMI) sound

5 Stars
Posted Friday, November 15, 2019 by Jonathan This is my favourite performance of the Elgar Concerto. Whereas most performers (including modern ones) want to ram this concerto down your throat in the quickest possible time, this performance is far more measured and introspective. Haendel has the ability to express her musical ideas so as to reinforce the composer's intent rather than indulge in fancy self-indulgent showmanship and the histrionics typical of the modern generation. Her actual sound is very easy on the ear as well - something I cannot say for most modern players. The sound on this disc is top-drawer late analogue era EMI. Meaning not up to Decca standards but still very good and very listenable - with perhaps just some typical late-EMI era analogue bloom and a lack of inner detail in relative terms. The violinist is admirably well balanced relative to the orchestra (again, meaning not overblown). My particular disc bought from Acoustic Sounds was flawless.

Very Enjoyable

Posted Friday, October 19, 2012 by Andrew Like Volume 1, Volume 2 is excellent! The program on this record feels better paced than that on Volume 1. Having Brooks Smith as accompanist, Rabin feels more at ease at quiet moments and more focused at furious ones. The sound quality is very good, the record is flat and quiet. It is a shame this was not released at the time of the recording but I am glad to have it now. EMI Testament does a great job with these records!

Beautiful music in a poor recording

Posted Saturday, August 18, 2012 by Anonymous I was very disppointed because this LP has a lot of noise and shows a flat music scenery. But the music is beautiful.

An amazing historic recording!!

Posted Thursday, December 18, 2008 by R. Grajales For the record I own a late 1960's lp pressing and also a cd version made in the 1990's and 2000 version made in Japan [one the best cd's pressing I ever heard], but this version is amazing; clear and cristal sound.

This an amazing historic recording made 55 year ago! Truely and excelent mono sound; Callas and Di Stefano are in top form. If you are an opera fan, you must have this recording in lp. I hope in the future some of the great opera recordings made by Lewis Layton for RCA will be available; in the meantime I will enjoy, indeed, this lp.

Carlo Maria Giulini - Dvorak: Symphony No.7 Product No: AEMI 3325

I am completely biased but I love it!

Posted Sunday, October 5, 2008 by Frederic I've heard Giulini in concert many times and it is true that his directing style could not be further away from Bernstein or Klaus Peter Flor - Giulini favoring small and discrete moves and eschewing any physical excitation as if almost apologizing for standing between the audience and the musicians. Yet his sound is nothing small, discrete or apologetic. Giulini calls forth huge romantic images which serve Dvorak's 7th beautifully; his ability to shape the London Philharmonic to paint extremely diverse landscapes makes this disc one of the few references on the 7th. Greatly recommended and the EMI pressing is technically perfect, preserving the beauty of the master tapes.

A classic performance

4 Stars
Posted Monday, May 16, 2005 by Anonymous A classic performance (now also re-issued on CD/SACD) - wonderfull playing by Du Pre and an excellent recording, which stands up to the recent digital re-issue. Very slightly marred by some crackling noises during the first minute of the record.
