The single greatest recording of 1975

5 Stars
Posted Sunday, March 12, 2023 by Jimmy James Was blown away upon hearing this album back in 1977 and I'm still blown away in 2023. I think I bought this SACD last year but had misplaced in my collection. Found it on a rainy day and rejoiced. This recording is just sublime. Pat and Jaco were just the perfect pairing at the perfect time. Think what could have been had they remained together (and alive in Jaco's case) to have been creating this kind of music for almost 50 years. The world would be a different place. In case of this SACD treatment, the price of entry is a tough pill to swallow but it's totally worth it. There is truely more there, there. A whole lot more depth to the instruments. Jaco's bass has a much fuller, bolder sound. I always thought the original ECM cd sounded terrible but the music was too good for that to matter too much. Well, here that veilled, thin sound is gone thank goodness. Rejoice!

Eric Dolphy - Out There Product No: CPRJ 8252 SA

Category: Hybrid Stereo SACD

Outstanding

5 Stars
Posted Sunday, March 12, 2023 by Brian VanPelt Every instrument comes through loudly and with visceral force. It feels like the players are in the room with you, but then there is a little reverb, so the room feels bigger.

Eric Dolphy plays several instruments and comes out of the left channel, clear as a bell. The bass seems to be in the middle, while the cello and drums are in the right channel; although I think on one song the cello was in the left channel with Dolphy. You can feel the bass plucks in your gut. The drums can have powerful thwacks, with good cymbal decay. The cello can be gloriously searing.

There is no distortion, no tape hiss, just great sound. Just about a perfect SACD.

All Wrongs Righted! GRAB this while you can!

5 Stars
Posted Thursday, June 16, 2022 by Dace Gisclard I gave the Australian Eloquence CD's of the Albeniz and Ravel a rave review on AMAZON, only to be dismayed when another reviewer pointed out that the stereo channels of the tracks played by the Paris Conservatoire were REVERSED! Thankfully, that problem has been corrected here, and the remastered sound is terrific. The only remaining fly in the ointment is that these Analogue Productions SACD's retain the incorrect ordering of the movements as it was on the RCA LP's--a relatively minor issue--that's what the programming feature is for!

The flawed Eloquence CD's have been discontinued, and are now (6/16/22) selling for astronomical prices. An inquiry to Eloquence yielded the information that their set is OOP, and they have no intention of issuing corrected copies. At present, this AP set is a collector's best bet for this much-sought-after legendary recording, and is likely to remain so. GRAB it while the price is still reasonable.

Wow great value

5 Stars
Posted Wednesday, March 9, 2022 by Mark I bought this for $5 and listened on my Mark Levinson setup. It was amazing. Spider and a fly, still blue water, and sunny side of the street were oddly familiar and highly enjoyable as was the broader introduction to 40s era blues.

Major Disappointment

2 Stars
Posted Wednesday, December 21, 2016 by David W Munch, BSO, Zamkochian all brilliant. Recording is not. Strings are shrill and lack definition. Overall there is no depth or warmth. Seems like many parts of the recording were highly oversaturated and could not be rescued by this remaster. Sections that are mezzopiano or mezzo forte actually sound quite good, furthering the disappointment in those sections that are louder, Quite a shame especially when compared with the Living Stereo recording of Reiner - Alexander Nevsky from just one year later, a recording with elegant balance, tone and accuracy. Get this one for the historical performance but don't expect to be wowed by the acoustics. You won't be. A real shame.

Pasionless

1 Stars
Posted Monday, March 21, 2016 by Cal Liedtke While the studio mastering and the individual artists that Stanley surrounds herself with are all outstanding it is Lyn Stanley herself that is a huge disappointment. Indeed, Stanley is the most passionless vocalist I have ever heard.

The Best Version of A Classic, Favorite Album

5 Stars
Posted Thursday, March 10, 2016 by Jeffrey Fritz "Album 1700" is, by far, my favorite Peter, Paul & Mary album. I own the original LP and the Warner Brothers CD.

So how does the SACD sound? In a word "fantastic!" The vocals are clean and clear. Dick Kniss' upright acoustic bass is amazing on "Weep for Jamie" and "Whatshername." Clear, clean, strong and powerful-- much more so than on either the LP or CD. You can hear every string on the bass as it's played. The rest of the instruments come through sounding natural and real.

Kevin Gray has somehow figured out how to tame Mary Travers vocals. Mary had a powerful voice that could overload just about any microphone used to record her. How Kevin Gray overcame that is a mystery--but I'm glad that he did.

Tape hiss is audible during the quiet passages. I think that's a good thing because it may mean that processing was kept to a minimum in the remaster.

Kevin Gray's remaster lets me hear what happened in the recording studio back in 1967--and that

Sound Quality is Not an Upgrade

2 Stars
Posted Saturday, August 8, 2015 by Donald Scarinci Very disappointing sound quality for a limited playback SACD that cannot be ripped and played back from a hard drive. The sound is thin and tin-like with little dynamic range or depth even on the base and low synth.

This SACD has hiss on every song. The background hiss is so loud on the first song that I closed my windows because I assumed there was noise outside. It was not outside. The noise came from the speakers. Don't spend the money on this CD. If you have the record, that is about the best sound you are going to get unless or until someone decides to do a remaster. It is too bad. I have been waiting for the Nice classics.

True Stereo

5 Stars
Posted Tuesday, May 19, 2015 by Tony S We now have 3 versions regular CD, Mono CD and this...the mono CD should be kept and played if your an audiofile because it's different than the SACD release and regular CD. The SACD release is essential and great because you can hear the guitar playing clear as day if your in dream land you would really think he's in the room with you. The vocals are basically on the left and it does sound real. I guess that's the idea of paying 29.99$ for these releases as opposed 5-10$ for the CDs the sound is much fuller much warmer and as a positive consequence more real more life like in sound. I recommend this release I think it was done very nicely and if you really love Bob Dylan's music you'll surely love this release.

A vocal masterpiece

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, April 18, 2015 by Jerry The stereo mix is outstanding, with background vocals surrounding the main vocals, presenting full, rich harmonies and great fore-ground and background contrasts. The brilliance of Brian Wilson comes shining through in his arrangements, where vocals are king, and the guitar, drums, etc. are afterthoughts. It is a pleasure to pick out each individual vocalist during the harmonies, and it is a testament to how well these songs were originally recorded. The mono mixes are a stark contrast, and seem dull and lifeless compared to the stereo.

Sadly, the liner notes are non-existent, except for the original blurb from the back of the album cover. I would have really enjoyed some detail about the source material, mastering process, etc. A lost opportunity.
