The Real Acoustic Sound of Great Jazz Artists!

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, July 28, 2018 by Anonymous It goes without saying that the musicians, songs and performances on this disc are all among the very best ever. I played clarinet in bands and orchestras during the 1950s and 60s. This is what real acoustic instruments sound like at an intimate jazz venue. This is the essence of Hi Fidelity listening. To me, it is far superior and more enjoyable than today's ubiquitous large, loud, sound reinforced events. I also prefer it to close miked sound booth recordings. 3-channel stereo SACDs take your listing experience to the ultimate level! The musicians stay put no matter where you are in your listening room, so invite your friends to enjoy the music with you because every listening seat is a sweet-spot!

Duke Ellington - Masterpieces By Ellington Product No: CAPJ 4418 SA

Category: Hybrid Mono SACD

Beautiful sound and now improved packaging.

5 Stars
Posted Sunday, January 29, 2017 by CJ Feeney This is a fantastic sounding disc given the age of the recording. Beauiful sounding solo instruements and the group arrangements really sing.

My original review reads as follows:

"I felt I had to deduct a star as the overall package is thin on information. Titles, composers, vocal credit to "Yvonne" but no other musician credits. Date of album recording, but not recording of bonus tracks. No recording venue stated. No explanatory notes of this albums place in Jazz history, no detail on the modern clean up and mastering."

To my surprise, a few months later Analogue Productions sent me an email asking. "If we sent you an improved set of packaging, would you re-review it?"

Wow, yes please.

The new insert includes the full band line up for each piece, more accurate recording session details and an impressive essay on the history of each piece in the years between composition in the 1930s onwards up to the 1950/51 LP recordings.

Excellent work. Fifth star well earned.

Stereo great, multichannel useless...

2 Stars
Posted Thursday, July 26, 2012 by Tim Casey ...but I'm giving you guys 2 stars for at least saying in bold at the bottom of the description that you used the old Sony multichannel mix. However, I hadn't noticed that caveat before I bought it.

I wanted it because it was multichannel. I should have read closer. All of the instruments are coming out of the center channel, except for the drums, which are spread out in the front left and right speakers. I didn't notice anything out of the rear speakers at all. And there are absolutely no low frequencies in this mix - a problem that the old Sony SACDs had with this title and "Kind of Blue" as well. The upright bass sounds like a kid's plastic toy. The stereo sounds rich, but this multi mix - why on earth did you give this anemic mix new life?

I was hoping for better from you guys (your other stuff is great). I wish I could return it, but it's already opened.

Nat 'King' Cole - St. Louis Blues Product No: CAPP 993 SA

Category: Hybrid 3-Channel Stereo SACD

perhaps his greatest album

5 Stars
Posted Tuesday, February 2, 2010 by Anonymous This is a pre-release review. I know that Steve Hoffman & his associates have done an outstanding job when it comes to the quality of the sound. How do I know? Because Hoffman's previous NKC releases are the best out there.

Anyway, I'm just going to say a few words about the album itself. I'm a huge Nat King Cole fan, but I think this is probably my favorite of all of his albums. It's an amazing mixture of songs written by one of the fathers of the blues (WC Handy), fantastic orchestration by Nelson Riddle, and wonderful vocals by NKC. It's an amazing album from start to finish. It's kind of his Sgt. Peppers, if that makes any sense. For some reason this album is not as famous as some of the others, but it's just as good. If you like Nat King Cole at all you'll be doing yourself a favor by ordering this album.
