One of the most accurate musical cartridges at any price

Posted Monday, January 23, 2023 by Anonymous Somebody who writes for Stereophile magazine suggested this cartridge to me over a 3K Soundsmith voice I'd been using for a while that was good but overly analytical and boring. The Hana ML is everything, It's not. It's a fun, involving cart to listen to for many hours at a time, and equals many cartridges more than twice its price. Now when I cue a record on my old VPI Classic 1, I just sit back, relax and enjoy the music. Over the years, I've owned many more pricey low output MCs, but none of them come close to the sound of the Hana ML. Highly recommended.

I'd always heard that mono records would sound better with a mono cartridge, but (a) I wasn't thrilled about changing cartridges all the time and (b) it just didn't make sense to buy a 'cheap' mono cartridge when I've got a Soundsmith Hyperion ES. Well, I ran into a great deal on this one, and then built myself a two-arm table. (You can see photos of it on my website: Just search for my name.) Problems solved. And oh was it worth it! It's just an astonishing cartridge. It's hard to know how much of it is the mono part and how much is the cartridge (I don't have a stereo version to compare). But what's most noticeable is the timbral purity. I have often been listening to records in the kitchen, and something will happen in the music, and I'll have to remind myself that it's a recording. At one show the supplied table had a brand new Clearaudio Concept MC cartridge, and he went out of his way to call me to tell me that he thought this $1000 cartridge equaled if not bettered the $7000 Lyra. He had listened the the Clearaudio for 3 days, as it broke in, and really loved its midrange accuracy, speed, and overall sound. I bought one and have loved it ever since. Fabulous cartridge.

Posted Friday, March 3, 2017 by NJ Jason I have had this cart for about a month now and I have been breaking it in. It's a crystal clear cart with very detailed sound. Acoustic pieces sound amazing (especially acoustic guitars) and vocals sound like the singer is in the room with you. I was just listening to Johnny Cash American I tonight and it was like Johnny Cash was sitting in my music room. Keep in mind, you can't just throw this on any table. You need to have a table up to the task. I am using a VPI Prime and it seems like a good match to me. I'm also using KEF LS50's and an old McIntosh MC2300. I could not ask for better sound that I am hearing here.

Posted Friday, January 20, 2017 by Anonymous This cartridge sounds good, but seems quite analytical to me, the soundstage left ro right is quite good, but depth isn't one of its strengths. Also, it is very hard to properly set-up (even with alignment tools, test LP and oscilloscope). Very fussy about tracking force too. I found that 2.1 grams works much better than the recommended 1.75. A bit overpriced. If you're looking for of a more lush option, consider something like the ZYX R100.If you're looking for fast and highly detailed, this might be a good option.

The right choice

Posted Thursday, April 7, 2016 by LD100 After owning the Kleos SL for over a month, I think I can fairly review it and the result is 5 stars. The Kleos replaced a Lyra Argos I used for a little over ten years mounted in a Linn Ekos tonearm. The Kleos is everything the Argos was, detailed and neutral, but to a much greater extent. An extended low end is also apparent. The only caveat that I can think of is that the SL seems to be sensitive to 60 cycle hum so proper cable management is required. I would make this purchase again without hesitation and highly recommend this cartridge to my friends, although once they hear it no recommendation is necessary.

It goes beyond he typical hi-fi characteristics that people rave about (imaging, inner detail, etc.). Difficult to describe in words.

Posted Tuesday, March 11, 2008 by Miller W Steel I upgraded from a Benz Micro MC L2 that I still have on another VPI JMW Arm wand and switch back and forth, but right now it is all KOETSU all the time. As I go through my LP's and listen to this new sound they have with the BLACK, I'm in love. This is a wonderful product, The Benz was great mind you, but the three times more expensive Black is a wonder that must be heard to be understood. If you can get an audition please do so. If you can take a $1600 flier on a cartridge then this is about the best way I can think of spending the money. If you love that LP collection and have the Table Arm and Phono Stage ready get one of these then you write a review.

Nice, attractive, and easy to use wood stylus guard. Threaded mounting holes from top, so you cannot use some bottom threaded headshells; but this is a modern trend common to many carts. Not the last word in treble or bass extension, but an excellent vocal range and it makes music...
