Typical AP perfection

5 Stars
Posted Friday, May 30, 2025 by Jake Can't believe no one has reviewed this yet as it's the best selling Pablo title. I'll do my civic duty. Typical AP perfection: flat, dead quiet. Jacket on par with the Prestige series. I was surprised to find out this is MONO - it's not listed - and it's all the better for it. Now the real stuff: this was recorded in California, it is NOT an RVG recording. As such it sounds different. Not worse - DIFFERENT. Low end is stronger than an RVG album. At first I thought it was muddy. I turned down my sub 30% and wham, it opened up and unfolded like a flower. Tatum and Webster are both slightly more recessed than an RVG recording would have them. And I like it. A lot. This one is for LISTENING. Save others for your demo choice. Pour a drink and let this all time classic wash over you like a warm breeze. A welcome change from the million RVG albums I've been listening to. Just gorgeous.

First STEREO Release, and it's great

5 Stars
Posted Saturday, November 9, 2024 by Anonymous This record was originally released in mono. Mastering Engineer Matt Lutthans went back to the first-generation 4-track tape, mixed it live to stereo and cut his lacquers. The result is a dynamic and super-quiet sound that makes it seem like Basie, Brown and Bellson are RIGHT THERE in the room! Awesome.

Posted Saturday, August 24, 2024 by John Noffo Kahn Miss Vaughn possessed a voice of operatic proportions; and, for that reason, most of her recordings do not do her justice—with distortion often a problem. Not this one! Do NOT miss it!! Absolutely beautiful!!

A Must-Have!

5 Stars
Posted Monday, April 1, 2024 by Robert Spatz I give this reissue a strong recommendation. It sounds incredible on my Rega P3/Elys 2/NEO power supply. You are transported back to the studio during the original recording sessions. All the musicians are laid out in front of you, with lots of space around them. You can follow the bass line, and the bass sounds highly detailed. The horns jump out from far left and right, with a wide dynamic range. You can hear lots of air when Freddie is blowing, adding to the realism. The pressing was perfectly flat, and nearly dead silent. A must-have!
