Posted Saturday, September 30, 2023 by Anonymous Very good fidelity, quiet surface, and and moving performance. My SVS sub shakes the room with the pedal notes; didn't know vinyl had such low, powerful frequencies! Highly recommended if you like this music. One needs a good low frequency system to appreciate the power of this performance. Otherwise, just a good, clean, orchestration and balanced organ. Again, recommended!

Lovely

Posted Sunday, January 29, 2023 by Ian C This is really nice album. First, the pressing is absolutely silent. I mean silent. I don't know who they used to press it, but I want to buy all my LPs there!

The music is of course, mostly Bach, and played in a slow, deliberate manner but beautiful.

The same label also put out a solo Bach cello LP which I'm also about to review (spoiler: 5 stars!)

Fritz Reiner - Rimsky-Korsakoff: Scheherazade Product No: AAPC 2446-45

Yeah...I own the 33rpm too, and have no regrets buying this

Posted Sunday, October 2, 2022 by David Scherzer How many copies of a single recording is too many? Like so many others, I've been enchanted by this work and this performance for a long time. Long enough to have purchased my fair share of formats of this exact recording. Over the years, to date, I've purchased the following versions of this recording: 1) JVC XRCD2, 2) Analogue Productions SACD, 3) Chesky 33rpm, 4) Analogue Productions 33rpm, 5) the Analogue Productions 45rpm reviewed here.

I'll save you some reading and just summarize here: This is the clearest, most dynamic, and most "present" version of this recording I've yet heard. Granted, I haven't heard the 1/4" reel to reel nor an original shaded dog. But I REALLY struggle to imagine a better sounding version than this will ever be pressed on vinyl again.

So do I have any regrets buying this as my 5th version of the same recording? Not in the least!

such promise, until the needle hits the groove

Posted Thursday, August 19, 2021 by scott baxter I had such hopes, but this is a very noisy record. Far too many pops and audible grit throughout both disks. I always wash a brand new record, and re-washing made no difference. The record was put through a degritter cleaner and it made no difference. I bought a second lp set and it sounded just the same. This is wasted money. I have a near 40 year old Antal Dorati/London Symphony recording by London Digital and it is so much more quiet.

Apart from the abysmal surface, this 'read' of the score is rather more relaxed than I think it should be, but we're now talking about matters of taste. Overall, it's too languid, lacking attack on certain passages that should literally shock the listener. Both the Bernstein and Dorati led recordings do a better job in this respect.

Overall I'd say this is a very problematic recording that had superb potential, but that is squandered by the rash of artifacts scattered across the surface of both disks.

Best version

Posted Friday, December 13, 2019 by Mike The 45 rpm version pulls that extra out of the material to make it so much better than the 33 version.

Impressive but too noisy

Posted Friday, September 6, 2019 by Mike Very nice performance, very dynamic and full of fine timbre! Surface or other noise too pronounced nothing I would have expected from such a modern analogue recording.

Absolutely Stunning!!

Posted Sunday, September 4, 2016 by Al Webb This just may be the most life-like, transparent analogue LP I have ever heard in my 40 plus years of listening to music. I couldn't believe the level of resolution, dynamics and natural timbre of this recording. Even if you don't like chamber music you owe it to yourself to listen to this recording. Music-making at the highest level. Congrats to the recording and producing team and especially to the Janaki String Trio. Absolutely Stunning!!

Posted Saturday, February 21, 2015 by Arturo C This is a great "impress your friends" record. First class performance and superb recording. It does not have the presence of an original Sheffield D2D, but it will let you show off your stereo system.

Posted Monday, September 1, 2014 by Tom D This box is just stunningly beautiful. Of course, the music is known but I think this box set is the definitive version. The artwork is amazing, the attention for detail, the finishing, I am a very difficult person but this one deserves 5/5 for the first time in my collection... Thanks

Underwhelming

Posted Thursday, February 6, 2014 by MVBC It is remarkable that in the 1950s and 1960s sound engineers knew how to record a symphonic orchestra. Obviously in the XXI century, they don't. This recording is a sonic soup. It is not precised on what speakers this bouillon was mixed, but I can guarantee they were not JBL professional studio monitors! These guys should embark on a Mercury Living Presence experience for ear opening. Do not believe the grandiose reviews from the media. As for the musical value, riding on a famous name does not cut it: it's anemic. I truly feel that I wasted $50 on the half speed mastered 45 RPM version.

Posted Wednesday, November 2, 2005 by Anonymous This is one of the best 45 rpm recordings. But be aware that there is only Ravel on the 2 records. No Ibert.
