Bellari VP130 Tube phono stage
The vp130 is a tube phono preamp with a built-in headphone amplifier, for use with moving-magnet and high output moving-coil cartridges. The vp130 is designed to amplify an RIAA equalized phono signal to a hi-level signal. Since the unit utilizes tube circuitry, the resulting output signal is more warm and musical than solid state preamplifiers. The real kicker aside from the price and stellar sound is that it's manufactured in the US.

Is it as good as my friends $12,000 preamp, no but is my friends preamp 40 times better? Absolutely not. When I first got this preamp, after break in, it sounded good and a bit reserved, but very musical. Then I replaced the little dinky wall wart that had something like 500 or 800 milli-amps for a 2 amp regulated model with the same voltage. WOW! It was a whole different amp. The base is deeper and tighter, the highs cleaner, the rhythm & pace is in a whole different league. Now my friends $12,000 isn't even twice as good. It is just a little better. My system consists of Audio Research preamp & amp and 40" ribbons with super long throw 8" woofers so they can tell you if something is wrong. I had an associate who mixes records listen. He said there was not one thing missing from the record. Not only could he identify the reverb unit, he could tell the setting the reverb was set to. If you are a starting to medium level listener, it won't let you down once you add the extra juice.

Wow! This is a huge improvement over the built-in stage of my preamp. Listening to the Robert Plant / Alison Krause album through this was just incredible - the vocals were smooth, detailed, and life-like. This is certainly not the last word on ultimate detail or air, but it is great to listen to, neat to look at, and made an improvement at least equal to its asking price (and that is coming from a "frugalphile").

Sounds great, but required some fiddling

When I first connected this guy and fired it up, HMMMMMMMMM. This is a pretty standard complaint from what I've been reading elsewhere.

First thing to do is to find out if the hum is internal. Unplug everything, get it away from all your other gear, plug in the power supply and a pair of headphones and see if it hums. If not, then you've got other issues but at least it's not internal. By the way, this makes a dandy headphone amp. Really sounds nice

Next, I yanked the Chinese 12AX7 tube and use a lower gain old RCA 5814A (lots of other choices for tubes too). Don't sweat using a lower gain tube, just turn up your amp a little. The preamp has a knob for gain as well. This reduced the hum but not entirely.

Finally, I had to open the case and place a small piece of elec. tape between the PCB and where it mounts (near the LED). Leave that screw out and put it back together with the other three. Hum gone.

Anyway, for the money and fiddling, great preamp. Sounds super.
