Analogue Productions' Blue Note and Nat "King" Cole Reissues WIN A Positive Feedback 2010 Brutus Award!
"...if you haven't picked up every one of the Blue Note and Nat King Cole reissues from Chad Kassem and company at Acoustic Sounds, you're really missing out!" - David W. Robinson, Positive Feedback, Issue 52
One of the best known record dates in the history of modern jazz, the chemistry among Adderley, Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones and Art Blakey is amazing. Their reworkings of "Autumn Leaves" and "Love For Sale" are masterpieces. Miles' title tune and Nat Adderley's "One For Daddy-O" are classics.
Recorded in 1958.
Cannonball Adderley, sax (alto)
Art Blakey, drums
Miles Davis, trumpet
Hank Jones, piano

All of the instruments are very clear. The drums are on the right, the piano in the middle, and the trumpet and sax are on the left. The bass seems to be in the back, somewhere between the drums and the piano. The piano, while clear, is also a little soft, while all of the other instruments are quite vivid/sharp. The underwhelming piano is something that I believe all Rudy Van Gelder recordings had. This is the same situation with the record as well. It's not that big of a deal and, if you listen to enough Blue Note albums, you get used to it.
If you know the record, then you know what it sounds like - now imagine that without surface noise. I don't remember for sure about the record, but on this SACD the soundstage is quite spacious and 3-dimensional. The piano seems further back, while the brass and drums seem quite forward. There were times when the music seemed to stretch beyond my speakers.
Pick this up quick as they sell out fast.
