The award winning Super HL5plus is the seventh generation of the Harbeth line that launched the company in 1977. The generous enclosure combines with the unique Harbeth RADIAL bass unit to create a warm, detailed sound that is completely box-less.

"I'm very pleased to say that today, 26 July 2005, we were awarded ISO9001 certification. This proves that although we are a small craft business, we have the control and monitoring system in place to ensure that the speakers that leave our door are to the highest standard. Providing that we maintain our QC, the certification lasts for 10 years with an annual audit, and a monthly fee. Is it possible that we are the only UK specialist speaker company to be awarded ISO status?" - Alan Shaw, Harbeth

"If the glory of the Super HL5 is its neutral midrange, the treble is exceptionally well presented-extended, open and sweet...I thought the Super HL5's bass was exceptional...full, rich, deep, warm without being woolly. I think you'd have to be an audiophile idiot to want to extend - and most likely spoil - such seamless quality of sound with a subwoofer. The Harbeth Super HL5 is one of the finest speakers to come my way. Give it a listen, lest you spend more - much more - and get far less lasting musical satisfaction. This speaker has been a classic for more than a quarter of a century, and will still be a classic 25 years hence. You'll likely never regret having bought a pair." - Sam Tellig, Stereophile, February 2005

"The Harbeth speakers are amazing! They are very neutral, yet very articulate. They have quite punchy low end for their size. Drums and percussion are reproduced with stunning weight and clarity. After using them as primary speakers to monitor a direct-to-disc recording, I can recommend them without hestiation!"

Knowing that the SHL-5 Plus has just been announced, and that the announcement from Harbeth states the SHL-5 Plus offers more "air and presence," I just couldn't resist writing in and saying that I don't find my previous version to be sorely lacking in either "air" or "presence." Granted, one needs to invest in electronics and quality cabling, and provide a superb front end (sound source), but in doing so, the sound they produce is exceptional.

I'm not suggesting that the SHL-5 can't be improved upon. Kudos to Alan Shaw for trying. All I'm saying is that the "old" SHL-5 design is a musically coherent, natural sounding loudspeaker that doesn't lack for air or presence, as long as one is fussy about room placement and all the gear used with them.

In my experience, if the recording is well engineered and playback equipment sitting in front of the speakers are of excellent quality, what ends up coming out of "the old" SHL-5 is nothing short of marvelous (miraculous even).

A World-Class Speaker

I have compared the SHL5s with speakers costing up to $13,000 and none have had anywhere near the natural midrange of the Harbeths. If you favor vocal music, I don't think you can do better, save the Harbeth Monitor 40s. Not to say that these are only good on vocals. They are remarkable with any type of music, but are best suited for listeners who value quality of tone over thump and sizzle. Another great thing about the Harbeths is that they do not highlight flaws in your electronics. While they appreciate fine components, you can drive them with lesser-priced gear and still achieve outstanding results. They are more like fine musical instruments than speakers. The bass is full, but not boomy. The highs are extended, but not tizzy. I could go on, but why? I know 4 grand is not peanuts, but i've tried the $1500 and $2500 "best buys" and they just can't deliver what the SHL5s can. If you appreciate the finer things, these will not dissapoint. You will love listening to them.
