The Berliner Meister Schallplatten company was founded in 2012 in order to revive a sound recording method which is rarely used today: the direct cutting of vinyl long-playing records. In a direct-to-disc recording, the sound is transferred in real time via a microphone to the cutting machine, whereby the cutting stylus "scratches" the oscillations onto the lacquer disc.
Katie Mahan's all-Gershwin recording includes "Rhapsody in Blue," "Three Preludes," and three songs. Katie recorded the program live in the Meistersaal in Berlin in December 2016. Direct-to-Disc recordings are unique in that they are completely live performances, featuring no editing whatsoever, preserved on vinyl. Released July 2017.
