The Beatles get back to mono in a limited edition 14 LP box set!

180-gram LPs pressed in Germany by Optimal Media

Newly remastered for vinyl from the analogue tapes by Sean Magee and Steve Berkowitz

Cut to lacquer on a VMS80 lathe

Exclusive 12" 108-page hardbound book with rare studio photos!

"The EMI representative told me that after absorbing the criticism heaped on the digitially sourced stereo box - including the extensive coverage, which was correctly construed as constructive criticism - the decision was made to produce the mono LPs using an all-analog mastering chain. ... Berkowitz told me that in his opinion and in the opinions of many, the mono mixes were the more important reissues and I agree." - Michael Fremer, To read Fremer's full report, including his exclusive access to one of the mono mastering sessions, click here.

A seriously audiophile-minded undertaking! The Beatles in mono is how most listeners first heard the Fab 4's first recordings, when mono was the predominant audio format. Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary.

Now comes The Beatles In Mono vinyl box set - 14 180-gram LPs for sale individually and as a lavish, limited boxed edition featuring a 12" 108-page hardbound book with rare photos and fascinating archive documents.

The release includes all nine original mono mixed U.K. albums plus the original American-compiled mono Magical Mystery Tour and the Mono Masters, a three LP collection of non-album tracks also compiled and mastered from the original analogue tapes.

As mentioned in the quote above, analog expert and viny guru Michael Fremer, of, says EMI representatives heard and responded to criticisms concerning digitally sourced mastering used to produce The Beatles Stereo Box Set on vinyl. For the mono version, the decision was made to use an all-analog mastering chain to the degree possible.

"It's important to remember that the tapes have aged - some as much as fifty years - and the monitoring, playback and mastering equipment have changed as well, even though the work was done in the very same room in which the originals were mastered. Solid state has replaced tubes in the cutting chain," writes Fremer.

The Beatles' mono albums have been newly mastered for vinyl from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by Grammy-winning engineer Sean Magee and Grammy-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz. While The Beatles In Mono CD boxed set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, for this new vinyl project, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records without using any digital technology. Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers.

Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles' albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.

Fremer says the lathe was equipped with a Neumann SX-74 cutter head. The originals were cut on a Scully lathe, perhaps with a Westrex cutter head.

This is really a deluxe reissue project, done properly, and with careful attention to detail. Beatles collectors and even casual fans of the Lads from Liverpool will be transfixed. Treat yourself!

Superior quality vinyl, mastering, book, and packaging

Please adjust your sound system - zero everything out before critcizing the sound quality. I promise you will be blown away when you adjust your hearing to mono. The album sleeve reproductions are so well done that it's sick and nerdy. The book is made with the thickest most durable grade paper available, and the content is glossy and interesting. The box is built to stand the test of time - pretty sure you could keep it for a hundred years with minimal wear. But back to the recordings....@#$%! it - you just need to check it out for yourselves.

I will not make friends with this statement but unfortunately it is true: The Beatles did not make great sounding records. Great music but not great sonics. The first four albums were the worst but none had outstanding sonics. Is it better in Mono? Yes with some qualifications. Less veiled but also less spacious than the stereo pressings. If you are looking for a psychedelic experience the stereo is preferred. Cleaner sound with the mono. Is it worth it to buy the box? Not from a dollar and cents point of view. It is cheaper to buy the individual lps than to buy the box. Do you want a hard to store box and a book? If so buy the box, otherwise buy the individual discs and skip the lesser albums if you like. Are these better than an early clean British pressing? I do not own any to compare them to but they are preferred to the American Capitol pressings that I do own. Still a fun purchase be it an expensive one.

I was hesitant to buy these as I have the Stereo MFSL Box set. I am totally glad I did... man these sound great! I have had more enjoyment listening to these than just about any other copy I have owned. The lp's are flat and quiet and as I have said sound amazing. I just don't see how you can go wrong with this set!!!

I own all the original Parlophone albums in NM condition and when I starting collecting them several years ago it took a lot of time and a lot more money then this set cost to track them down. The records in this set sound great and mine had no defects. This is a must own set for Beatles fans and an economical way to own all analog mono Beatles albums.

2014 mono vinyl VS. UK Blue Box stereo LPs

Are these 2014 mono records better than the holy grail UK Blue Box stereo records? Maybe.

The 2014 mono records are much better in terms of packaging, covers, and inner sleeves. Yes -- the 2014 records are dead flat and only a RARE tick may be heard, and I mean rare. These pressings are 99% flawless.

But what about the sound? While BOTH sets sound amazing and are worth owning the 2014 mono pressings offer a more "you are there" experience on these early albums. HOWEVER, the Blue Box stereo LPs offer a more dynamic wall of sound and often have punchier drums, clearer highs, and engage the romance of how (we) first heard these LPs years ago.

Which set of LPs sound better? Both box sets are the ultimate in the kind of sound that they sought to provide -- mono and stereo. Great to have bought this 2014 mono set as my LAST set of mono pressings. They have earned the right to sit next to my UK Blue Box stereo set as the best sounding Beatles records ever produced.

Enjoy both!

Amazing Sound - Really Poor Quality Control

Pages 2-4 of Book have tiny paper dust embedded into the printing. Page 3-4 are trimmed incorrectly, Please Please Me covered with paper dust, all albums have some paper dust, one fingerprint, don't bother putting dirty albums in nice plastic lined sleeves. Two albums had vinyl trimming threads on the edges, two others had rough trims, holes sizes on albums have varied from too tight to put on the turntable to 0.5 mm of play. One dimple in the pressing in the leaden grooves one scuffed.

NOW having said that, the mastering, and the sound are amazing. I have THE BEATLES in the room live and in person. I am amazed at the amount of depth/instrument separation in the mono mixes. So much better than the stereo mixes I have been suffering with for decades. So 5 star sound rating is rated 3 stars due to the poor quality control, that should not happen in a special boxed set that costs this much. Will I send it back, Hell No, I'm listening.

The Ultimate Beatles Reissue

The first time hearing these albums in mono on vinyl. My wife and I were simply blown away last night. Played using a Sumiko Blackbird cartridge and Pro-Ject Perspex turntable. Did not sum the signal and the albums were void of noise and flat. We only had previous stereo albums or CDs for a reference. We returned our stereo vinyl box set after playing only four albums . I have some nice vinyl stereo albums purchased in the 70's, but the mono box set blows them away. These mono reissues are simply great.

Just A-B Revolver with my original mono Parlophone. Spot on all the sound with 50 years of ticks and pops gone. While I still think he originals are cool because of the history you won't have to spend stupid money to get the sonic thrill. Truth be told I still like all of these in stereo If only the same attention to detail was put into that project life in Beatle land would be perfect. If only there was a company that specialized in remastering and pressing records to exacting standards Oh well.

Couldn't wait to dive into this collection when it arrived at my doorstep on release day. Everything you have read and heard about this set, is true. The sound is remarkable spinning on a Technics SL-1210/M5G equipped with a Ortofon 2M Blue and the Full Mono setting on an Onkyo receiver and there is absolutely no surface noise, just pure sound. Indulge, you will be glad you did

i've been waiting in anticipation ever since hearing about the project of an all analog reproduction. I'd been holding true to the UK "blue box" set as the best I could do from a sonic perspective... And now there's this... These records are absolutely fantastic. Quiet pressings w/ dynamics & ear candy unheard in the stereo mixes. Love it!

After botching the Beatles stereo releases in 2012, Apple has delivered what every Beatles vinyl fan has hoped for. The sound and quality is phenomenal to say the least. I will cherish this one for the rest of my life.
