Experience overwhelming sonics on this 2 LP Decca. Mahler Symphony No. 3 by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta with Maureen Forrester, contralto. Considered to be one of the best Decca recordings; made in March 1978 in Royce Hall, U.S.A. by recording engineers James Lock and Simon Eadon. Mastered by noted mastering engineer Willem Makkee from the original tapes on a Neumann VMS 80 lathe.

An excellent reissue of a late analogue Decca

This album is an excellent re-mastering of this classic late analogue era Decca recording. The very high quality and quiet pressings help to convey the shear scale of the work whilst also revealing the inner detail of the many extremely quiet passages. The only reasons for the 4 stars instead of 5 are (a) the amount of "wow" - particularly noticeable on side 3 - is at times a little more than I would expect from a 1978 analogue recording to the point where it can be distracting and (b) the 27 minutes of side 4 is cut right to the limit - only a few mm from the inner label - and detracts from the ultimate fidelity of the last 30 seconds or so of the symphony (which ends with a heck of a fortissimo bang rather than a whimper).

Still, overall this is a superb reissue and I hope that we might see all of Mehta's late analogue era Decca Mahler recordings come from Analogue Productions in the future - perhaps with a more expensive 4 x 45 RPM option.

Really great to see Analogue Productions tackle Mahler, this Mehta is a fine choice, anxious to see more Mahler on vinyl. The pressing is wonderful, mine is very quiet, the quiet ethereal passages are stunning here.

Would be fantastic to see Mehta's Mahler 2nd - almost a companion piece to this 3rd - or Klemperer's famous 2nd. Solti's or Barbirolli's 5th would be great too.
