Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound

Mono & Stereo magazine's reviewer Matej Isak says Chad Kassem's efforts via his Quality Record Pressings pressing plant "goes beyond simple vinyl revival." "What can I say? I have a few different copies of this album and this release is of a completely different nature of sound. Like with another unforgettable (release) Nat 'King' Cole — Love Is The Thing (AAPP 824-45) this is as good as it gets, without having the real master tapes on hand. It's a celebration of analog." Isak also raves, "Everything is even more subtle and present. Astrud's vocals finally got the needed three-dimensionality and 'spirit' and Getz's saxophone breathes out of proportion. When compared to other pressings, for example, Astrud is a mere statue. Here, she came alive with the feeling of real life-size. ... With 45 RPM benefits, the album gained better transients and a sense of atmosphere. It moves you more intimately and straight to the core." Matej Isak, Mono & Stereo magazine, May 2013. Beyond highly recommended." Named a Mono & Stereo Strictly Vinyl Analog Award winner. "...these are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don't want to miss...most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding. Particularly the early Billie and Ella mono records are incredible treasures of sonic beauty. I'd definitely ask Santa for the whole set, or, if you want to cherry pick, the most classic titles. Whatever you decide, you owe yourself at least a half dozen!" Winner of a 2012 Positive Feedback Online Writers' Choice Award - Danny Kaey, Positive Feedback Online, November/December 2011

"...To say that the resulting new stereo master is anything but a major sonic breakthrough would be to make the understatement of the decade. Simply put, audiophile jargon and usual hyperbolas aside, this new release is like hearing the record for the very first time, in the studio, with Astrud and team granting you a personal performance for the night. There is just so much more information present, that you really can't fairly compare any of the previous releases with this one." - Danny Kaey, Positive Feedback, September/October 2011

The original master tapes for this title had not been used since 1980 previous to this reissue. Also, for this Analogue Productions reissue the decision was made to master and present this album as it was originally mixed to master tape. With very few exceptions all versions of this title to date, including the original, have had the channels incorrectly reversed. With this version, you'll hear this title as it was intended to be heard, without the channels reversed. And again, those reissues you've heard up until now - definitely still breathy, warm and rich - were made from something less than the master. Prepare to hear the veil removed.

Astrud Gilberto says that her husband, Joao, informed Stan Getz that she "could sing at the recording." Creed Taylor recalls that it took Getz's wife, Monica, to get both Astrud and Joao into the recording studio; Mrs. Getz had a sense that Astrud could make a hit. And Getz himself is on record saying that he insisted on Astrud's presence over the others' objections. So who's right? What does it matter? The Gilbertos, Getz and the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim followed up the bossa nova success of Jazz Samba with this, the defining LP of the genre. With one of the greatest hit singles jazz has ever known - each one who hears it goes "Ahhh!"

Originally released in 1963.

Stan Getz, tenor saxophone
Joao Gilberto, guitar, vocals
Astrud Gilberto, vocals
Antonio Carlos Jobim, guitar, piano

Good but not what I had hoped for

I purchased this because of all the 5 star ratings. I have an inexpensive Verve pressing of this album already, which sounds superb. I wondered how much better it could sound than what I bought on the cheap. The answer for me was - no better. I have purchased many many other AP albums and have absolutely loved all of them except for this one and the Beach Boys animal sounds album that came highly recommended. AP is my "go to" for most new releases and repressings. Don't get me wrong. The album sounds great. Just not as good as the cheap 33rpm version I already owned.

If this record doesn't give you goose bumps, then you need a system upgrade, a technician, or both......................

Actually this one comes in two records, but it's still the best sounding pressing I've ever heard of this album. Sad to say that my old original mono is going up on the market now...

Better than I remember it.

Growing up in the 1960s my father was a jazz musician and I was hooked on jazz. The Getz/Gilberto album was prominent around the house. The original 33 1/3 album is long gone but listening to this new release vinyl brings it all back in spades. The disk is wonderful, very clean surface and quiet vinyl. So glad I bought it.

I do not have an original to compare but I do not know how it could be any better. QRP's have a clarity beyond even the best Classic Records that I have or have heard.

Thanks Chad Kassem!

I have been waiting a long time for this reissue and decided to listen multiple times before posting this review. I was not to be disappointed. Getz on sax- stunning resolution. Joao and Astrid on vocals spectacular. Joao on guitar just beautiful.

Simply the most intimate small ensemble performance that I have ever heard in this pressing. Outstanding in every manner. This is simply closest to live recording that i have heard. The disappointed listener should check the VTA VTF and all other aspects of his table since there is definitely something wrong with his setup. The gatefold is also done beautifully and the whole package simply oozes class. Marvelous pressing from AP.This recording is perfect for ending the work day .Come to think of it,morning, noon and evening. Well worth the price of admission. Just wish I didn't have to get up every two songs to flip the damn thing over! You guys have done it again and this time you have outdone yourselves .Bravo

My perennial favourite jazz/samba album and I have various iteration in CD's, SACD, SHM-SACD and Vinyl, the latest being the greatest (also have an original 1964 Verve Japanese pressing picked from a flea market). What can I say about this latest reissue from AP which is an abosolute delight and finally getting, IMHO, the 'right sound' or ambiance. Anyway... another long bouts of late nite music courtesy of Getz & Gilberto (and Astrud really)..

Utterly fantastic.

I find this release full of life, very quiet, and just plain great. The tape sounds fresh to me, and all the instruments especially the voices are clear as a bell. Stan Getz with his breathy sax sound is right there. Having heard him live several times, this is what he sounded like. The packaging is first rate and Analog Productions has upped their game in every way, including the rice paper record sleeves. Get this one without a doubt, I have owned one version of this release or another for many years.... this one is the best.

Exceptional Sonics!

I don't know what turntable the first reviewer used to evaluate this latest pressing, but on my humble Well Tempered Amadeus, the sonics were nothing short of fantabulous! The realism of Joao's voice was spooky and unnerving! I've heard the SHM version on a friend's totally tricked-out SACD player by Vacuum State. The sound was very respectable, but not even in the same league as the QRP pressing! The quality of the packaging is superlative. The finish and manufacture of the gatefold cover is just drool-inducing. QRP's achievement represents analog production at its zenith. We may never see the likes of it ever again! Grab yourself a copy or two for safekeeping… I sure will! Review by Jojo Isip

This record is alive! I have a time machine that brings me to 1963 in the studio with the artists. Crisp, clear, fantastic. I would pay double. This is why I love this hobby.

Surprised by "Disappointed"

This is the 4th version of this record I've purchased. I bought the original Verve, the CD release, the MoFi issue and this one. I feel it is an excellent issue. The surface is absolutely quiet, maybe Disappointed is right about the treble, it is a little weak. However, it is worth buying. I've enjoyed it very much. I've already played it five times! It is one of the greatest jazz recordings ever.

Disappointing release

I own the shm $75 SACD version and it sounds superior to this remastering. This version is very dark and somewhat muddy. The tape sounds aged - rolled off treble with poor instrument placement - which makes no sense since the shm also is using an old tape. I know this has received glowing reviews but buyer beware. It is a beautiful pressing with pristine packaging. I have ordered an original pressing from Gemm and will compare it to this version. Just one person's opinion.
