Frank Zappa - Hot Rats

Mastered and cut from the original analog master tape by Bernie Grundman, supervised by Gail Zappa

After releasing a "mother lode of Mothers" (of Invention) classics, by 1969 leader Frank Zappa was ready to break through other musical barriers that were still holding popular music in a conservative headlock. Being one if not the first album to be recorded using 16 tracks (twice the number being used at the time on both sides of the Atlantic), Hot Rats became a leading edge in both modern recording technology and the evolution of jazz/rock-fusion.

Mostly instrumental, it features six original compositions; three loose jam pieces, the remainder being tight ensemble arrangements. Some of the finest players around come together in varying combinations, all-the-while showcasing FZ's guitar virtuosity. Among others, Lowell George of Little Feat fame lends guitar, jazz violinists extraordinaire Don "Sugarcane" Harris and Jean-Luc Ponty plus fellow Mother Ian Underwood's keyboard and woodwind work, complete the leader's advanced vision. Mastered and cut directly from the original analog master tape by Bernie Grundman under the supervision of Gail Zappa.

After reading many reviews of this version I felt compelled to get a copy Without delay. I wish I hadn't. This version is not a patch on my original copy. By comparison it sounds flat and compressed and I found myself having to jack the volume up to see if it made any difference. Sadly it didn't. This is one of my favourite albums of all time and I now have three different versions on vinyl and two on CD. None are as good as my original copy although one of the CDs comes very close . I guess I'll just have to wait in the vain hope that eventually something will emerge to do this incredible masterpiece justice.

More Frank mastered like this Gail! PLEASE! Uncle Meat, Apostrophe, Overnite Sensation, Waka Jawaka, One Size Fits All, Grand Wazoo. Or release them as 24 bit 192Hz on DVD-A or Blu Ray stereo.

This has long been on my favorites. Superb job on this release, infinitely superior to my mid-70s vintage LP. I hope the rest of the Zappa catalog, or at least some of it, will follow.

Definitely Hot!

I bought this album without ever hearing it, based on reviews from other sites and from the knowledge that Zappa played a mean guitar. Man am I happy I did. Really cool record to throw on and just let it play. Sonically it's from Classic so you know it's top notch. Very few vocals which I wasn't sure how I felt about at first, but after buying this I think I might enjoy more instrumental based music.

Zappa was an amazing musician and this record is a fine example. Thanks Classic for another slice of heaven!

Great Frank

This is one of my favorite Zappa albums made before he got too commercial(for me)and started the silly singing/talking. I havnt heard the original for so long so I cant compare it to this.It might be a bit 'bright' at times but it sounds good and has great detail. Also, for once, this 'Classic' is a good pressing. At least the one I got is!
