Enrique Jorda - Falla: Three Cornered Hat

Classic Records (Everest)

Product No.:
AEVC 3057Q

200 Gram Vinyl Record

200 Gram LP

Manuel de Falla's famed 3 Cornered Hat is a hard piece to perform with the Latin sense of flair and excitement necessary to convey the wonder of the composition. Fiedler on RCA tries with some success to get the flair but is no equal for Argenta on London/Decca. The Jorda read with the London Symphony is electric from the first vocal burst! To say that Jorda owns this piece would not be an overstatement – it is exciting and largely festive in the way de Falla intended it to be! Add to a fantastic performance the Bert Whyte/Everest 35mm recording at London's famed Walthamstow Assembly Hall, and you have a desert island disc.

This LP was cut directly from the 35mm magnetic film using a vintage Westrex 1551 tape machine, with specially built playback electronics that are vastly superior to any others used on these machines to playback the original 35mm tapes. The Len Horowitz/History of Recorded Sound specially modified 1551, fitted with brand new playback heads matched to the revolutionary playback electronics was stationed at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. With Len Horowitz running the playback machine and Bernie Grundman mastering from the three-track 35mm tapes, Classic Records has been able to cut the legendary sound and performances directly from the 35mm magnetic film through Classic's all-tube tape playback system. Authentic tip-on construction jackets with all original artwork and labels add to this must have deluxe LP edition.

This LP is of the very best musically and sonically that Everest ever accomplished. Stunning sound and performance that is right up there with the very best from LONDON and EMI. But don't let that make you pass this one up.

Without a doubt one of the heaviest hitting sonic blockbusters of all times. Compelling sound and performance. Not easily outdone by any label. Recommended highly this breaks the sonic barrier all the way and pushes it a little further. Not to be missed at any cost. One of the crown jewels of the Everest catalog......... ++++

I had a near-mint original Everest pressing (magenta label) on hand to compare. The magenta label was in use when Belock still had control of pressing quality, and I find many to be better than the original blue/silver pressings. Though extremely costly to produce, the 35mm magnetic film recordings that Mercury, Everest and Command produced, are among the most vivid, three-dimensional recordings ever made. "The Three Cornered Hat" is a marvelous demonstration disc, as it features a soprano voice, male voices chanting and stomping, along with many interesting percussion effects. As good as the original is, the new Classic version is better in most respects. Its much cleaner and quieter, with an uncanny feeling of looking in and around the instruments in detail. Once heard, there's no going back to the older pressing. My particular copy had no pressing or noise problems that plague some Classic pressings. A 45rpm set of this one would be even better. Grab this now, before it slips away.
