As the band's third studio album, Safe Travels shows a new level of maturity in a musical and lyrical sense from the band's previous albums. The peppy piano pop songs are balanced with more poignant instrumentation in other tracks that speak to the band's desire to travel into new sonic territory. Ben Thornewill uses his classical background in writing a number of string arrangements, with the band continuing to explore their own pop-meets-jazz-meets-prog rock backgrounds.

The record is co-produced by Dan Romer, Ingrid Michaelson, and Jenny Owens. Since its initial release, the album has sold more than 40,000 copies worldwide.
