Bartók’s only opera is a drama for the ear and intellect, rather than for the eye, and is thus particularly well suited for portrayal on SACD. Composed in 1911, when the composer was just 30 years old, it presents a modern interpretation of the age-old fairy tale. In Balázs’s libretto, Judith’s persistent and fatal demand to know all Bluebeard’s secrets (represented by the famous seven doors concealing his seven dead wives) is offered as a warning not to demand full knowledge of another’s mind. On this occasion, the opera makes its first appearance on Super Audio CD, benefiting from the opportunity to present the drama in the new spatial stage offered by hi-resolution surround sound. It is also an original DSD recording.
