The eighth studio release for the Irish singer/composer, now on double LP
"The melodies are lovely, if conservative: as elegant and classically tailored as her gowns." — The Telegraph (U.K.)
"The lyrics often mention homecomings; the music is a warm bath." — The New York Times
After 75 million in sales; four Grammy Awards; six World Music Awards; an Ivor Novello, an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe nomination; and seven studio albums (plus the Paint The Sky With Stars compilation) which have hit the upper echelons of charts all over the world, Enya returned in 2015 with a new studio album, Dark Sky Island.
Three of Irish singer/composer Enya's older albums are also getting rereleased on vinyl. Watermark and Shepherd Moons were already available on vinyl in the past but it's the first time you'll be able to get The Memory of Trees on LP.
Dark Sky Island follows 2008's snowbound And Winter Came — the eight-year silence marks the longest break of Enya's career. For those unfamiliar, Enya is in fact a creative trio consisting of Enya herself (Eithne Ní Bhraonáin) who writes the melodies, plays all the instruments you hear and performs all the vocals herself, Nicky Ryan (who produces and oversees the recording of the music) and Roma Ryan (who writes the lyrics).
Delivered in her familiar Celtic-driven pseudo-classical Wall of Sound vocal style, Dark Sky Island also marks the return of Loxian, a language lyricist Roma Ryan first created for Enya on 2005's Amarantine and which is used here on the lavish march "The Forge of Angels" and the powerful "The Loxian Gate," which again echoes early Watermark-era standouts like "Storms in Africa" and "The Longships." While it would be unfair to call Dark Sky Island a throwback, writes AllMusic, it does manage to harness some of the power and creativity of Enya's early days and pairs it with both the confidence and shadows of age.
