Tinashe wows with her debut album - R&B up-and-comer
"...we might easily dismiss Tinashe as a one-hit wonder; at the very least another so-so singer adept at the eight-count but not quite sustaining your attention. She is, however, far more interesting vocally, sonically and subjectively than her Top 40 hit single '2 On,' might suggest, and her debut album, Aquarius, maikes that apparent." — 3.5 stars out of 5, Complex, October 2014
"Tinashe's solid and slinky debut album Aquarius largely works for the same reasons: It's smart, it's confident and it feels very now. The moments Tinashe spells out her growing ambitions is when she's most convincing." — 3.5 stars out of 5, Idolator, October 2014
One of the best R&B albums of 2014. To say that 21-year-old rising superstar Tinashe is a triple threat would be a lie — she's a quadruple threat. She acts, dances, sings, and has a black belt in Taekwondo(!). Is there anything else you could possibly ask of your next R&B obsession?
The Los Angelino singer-songwriter may have gotten an early industry start with one foot in film and the other in television, but Tinashe admits her heart has always belonged to music.
"I love to act and put on a show, but you're playing a character all the time," she explains. "For music, it's really just me being myself."
Aquarius, her debut album, is jampacked with lots of soulful swagger layered over silky melodies, reports Vogue, in a profile of the singer who's been praised in The New York Times as "the next Beyoncé." With features by A$AP Rocky, Future, and ScHoolboy Q, and production work by Dev Hynes, Mike Will Made it, and Ryan Hemsworth, there's no question Tinashe is ready for the big leagues — and her own spotlight.
"It's important for me to put out things that I think are good-I want to be a fan of my own stuff. I also want my live shows to be really awesome and dance is such an important element for me and my performances," says the songstress, who's teamed up with choreographer JaQuel Knight (of Beyoncé "Single Ladies" fame). "I was in a competing company and have been dancing since I was four-ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop-so it's a huge part of my life and my music."
