Thanks to revolutionary technology called
Direct Stream Digital (DSD) encoding,
a Super Audio CD or
SACD represents the highest quality sound source available today. There are
two major types of SACD, Hybrid and Single Layer.
A Hybrid SACD is made up of
two separate layers. One layer carries the normal CD information and the other
layer carries the high density SACD information. Any Hybrid SACD title can be
played on any CD player or
SACD player. A Single Layer SACD can only be played
with an SACD Player. Within those two groups are Stereo, Mono and Multichannel
SACDs. Stereo SACDs carry 2-channel (left and right speaker SACD information),
Mono carries just 1-channel and a Multichannel SACD carries as many as six separate
channels, each captured on disc at the
full DSD bit rate with the full DSD sound
quality. To enjoy this surround sound you will need an SACD player, the correct
amplification, and 5 speakers. Not all SACDs have Multichannel functionality,
so check the recording information of each title. More SACD information
