Disappointing

Posted by Brian

This record sounds like one of those 70's recordings that were rough around the edges. On every song, you can hear the results of a limited dynamic range. I believe that this must be the result of an old and worn-out tape. When Denver hits high notes, I cringe as I hear the distortion - the recording breaks up. This is terribly sad, because the soaring vocals are why I bought this album.

I suppose there are two fairly good sounding songs: "Sunshine on My Shoulder" and "The Box". The latter song is a spoken poem, and it suffers from the same breakup as the other songs, but since he's simply speaking the words, it didn't bother me that much. "Sunshine on My Shoulder" is sonically superior to any of the other songs, but even it could be cleaned up.

It's a shame. I won't buy another John Denver record from this collection. Thus, my search for a definitive John Denver record continues.

Disappointing packaging

The pressing and sound quality are as expected for the $55 package. BUT the packaging, Yuck ! ! Two sleeves? Why not a nice gatefold with some additional info or pictures a la Blue Note reissues or other titles at this price. Very disappointed in the packaging for such a seminal title fro this genius guitarist.

Excellent Sound Quality & Songs

Just bought this last week in 96/24 (samples sounded THE SAME to samples of the 192/24 one). In terms of song quality, this albums is FANTASTIC! Besides the great hits, the obscure songs are impressive as well. Not a weak track on here. A very solid album from start to finish.

With regards to sound quality, it's clear the production done on this was the best available. All the songs have plenty of depth musically and the soundstaging is very wide & expansive! I was really impressed with just how great it sounds and wonder why this album and artist isn't mentioned more often in music reviews, etc.

Highly recommended!!!!!

Peter, Paul & Mary - Album 1700 Product No: CAPF 1700 SA

Category: Hybrid Stereo SACD
Label: Analogue Productions

The Best Version of A Classic, Favorite Album

5 Stars
Posted by Jeffrey Fritz

"Album 1700" is, by far, my favorite Peter, Paul & Mary album. I own the original LP and the Warner Brothers CD.

So how does the SACD sound? In a word "fantastic!" The vocals are clean and clear. Dick Kniss' upright acoustic bass is amazing on "Weep for Jamie" and "Whatshername." Clear, clean, strong and powerful-- much more so than on either the LP or CD. You can hear every string on the bass as it's played. The rest of the instruments come through sounding natural and real.

Kevin Gray has somehow figured out how to tame Mary Travers vocals. Mary had a powerful voice that could overload just about any microphone used to record her. How Kevin Gray overcame that is a mystery--but I'm glad that he did.

Tape hiss is audible during the quiet passages. I think that's a good thing because it may mean that processing was kept to a minimum in the remaster.

Kevin Gray's remaster lets me hear what happened in the recording studio back in 1967--and that

Exceptional!!

This is right up there amongst the best live performances ever! The music is great, the recording is in another league altogether. While this is the only pressing I have heard, the sound is as open as it gets, the soundstage is HUGE, with spectacular dynamics and crystal clear resolution. This is better than most studio recordings I have heard.........brilliant!

Cat Stevens - Tea For The Tillerman Product No: XAPP9135D128
Available: InStock
Category: DSD (Double Rate) 5.6MHz/128fs Download
Label: Analogue Productions

Mostly WOW!

PROS: Real, lush, smooth, with none of the glare/compression of PCM with sample rates up to 24/192. Also, the tape transport issue of the 33-RPM edition from Analogue Productions is completely absent here, and one no longer has to be annoyed at the slightly off-centre pressing of the Analogue Productions 45-RPM edition.

CONS: Mastered so quietly that one has to strain to hear the opening notes to "Where Do the Children Play?" at a volume setting where other DSD files are slightly louder than comfortable.

CAVEAT: Have not yet listened to the equivalent Single Rate DSD download (also from the same mastering studio, by the same mastering engineer), so have yet to be able to say if there is an advantage to Double Rate DSD (namely, raising the file's noise an octave per doubling of sample rate, if not an increase in audio resolution as well) over the Single Rate DSD version.

OVERALL: Sounds GREAT, but did it really have to be mastered at such a low volume?

Amazing Quality & Must Have Album

Since it's a relatively old recording made in a less than ideal setting, I wasn't quite sure what this would sound like. But every Analog Production recording in my collection sounds great, so I gave it a try. I am glad I did. This is a spectacular album both as a performance and as a audiophile quality disc. I wish all digital music could sound this good.

James McMurtry - Complicated Game Product No: ACGM 013

Nice

This is a nice record, but I don't think anything I have heard from James McMurtry comes close to his 80's album "Too Long in the Wasteland". If you like James it's worth seeking that one out.

Joan Baez - Diamonds and Rust in the Bullring Product No: AAPF 080

A magical recording.

I own the original pressing of this recording (1989). It has always been one of my favorite records with incredible sonics. Thank you Chad for repressing this magical recording. An excellent job. You will get 90% of the sonics of the original pressing which is tough to find (and expensive). The spanish side 2 especially cut 2 "Llego Con Tres Heridas" is worth the price of admission. The original has a little better clarity to Joan's voice with a little deeper bass (electrical). Still a must have if you like Joan and great music.

Good Effort

I own over 500 vinyl albums and "Car Wheels" may by my #1 favorite album of all time. On a scale of 1 to 10 this album is an 11 musically. It doesn't get any better than Side 2. I rated it 4 Stars because the MOV pressing used a 24bit/96 digital master. However - they did a pretty good job. The recording is a little soft & warm which works out OK for me. Recommended Buy.

Mary Well Done Again

Another great Mary Black album remastered very well. Compared to the original pressing (which is expensive and hard to find now) there is greater weight and detail as the original sounds somewhat thin and harsh by comparison. A very quiet pressing seals the deal.

Rick Rubin's deft handling of the Australian Duo

4 Stars
Posted by Philip O'Hanlon

Angus and Julia Stone’s third album, an Australian brother & sister duo, musically quite folksy, laid back and really pleasant without descending into the soporific. Never having heard of this duo, I bought the double LP on the strength of Rick Rubin’s involvement as producer.

Gorgeous interplay of Julia’s dreamy, angelic voice with Angus’ baritone, makes for terrific contrast. Listen / watch “Grizzly Bear” on YouTube.

Musically charming & sparsely produced allows the music to maintain its folksy, organic feel. These guys deserve a lot more exposure. Highly recommended.

Wonderful classic arrangements of songs by Woody Guthrie. Bragg/Wilco along with Natalie Merchant bring a fresh new life to them! Pressed at Pallas in Germany, mastered by Grundman and cut by Chris Bellman. Needless to say you are in for a treat!

Another triumph from Sundaze

5 Stars
Posted by Dan Swan

I have now purchased all four of the Donovan mono releases from Sundaze and they all sound fantastic. When these records were released in the states they were electronically re-channeled for stereo by Epic, and although they sounded okay, they lost their original intent. This has now been corrected, and the results have been wonderful. Each album has a beautifully warm presence that allows the music to breathe. The pressings are really clean and without any surface noise at all. Very impressed.

Fred Neil - Fred Neil Product No: A4MB 231

The cornerstone of my music

5 Stars
Posted by Jerry

Fred Neil's soulful baritone, the sound of his twelve string, and some of the best songs written make this album a cornerstone for any collection, not just mine. This is the album that debuted "Everybody's Talkin'" a hit for Nilsson and most recently the album title for Tedeschi/ Trucks Live album, forty seven years later. "The Dolphins" became a standard for the folk rock scene, with renditions by Linda Ronstadt, It's a Beautiful Day, Tim Buckley, Beth Orton, Richie Havens and on and on. Fred does a wonderful melancholy version of Elizabeth Cotton's "Didn't We Shake Sugaree" on this. The album ends with an instrumental blues/raga piece. Although completely different, I find myself comparing it to Paul Butterfield's "East/West." I can't wait for this pressing to come out. It should be at the top of your summer listening list, too

An Audiophile Reference Recording

5 Stars
Posted by Donald Scarinci

Amber Rubarth has matured as a singer/songwriter with her latest album. This amazing recording is what happens when a record producer is an artist himself who can recognize great talent and make it come alive in your living room. Chesky Records and Amber Rubarth are made for each other. Rubarth is the new great sound of New York City and this recording is an audiophile listening experience. "Sessions from the 17th Ward" has become my reference CD in this genre.
