Great album, not a great SACD

4 Stars
Posted by Anonymous

The Who is my favorite rock band, and this is perhaps their greatest studio album (excepting Live at Leeds which is stunning).

The music here is great. If you don't have this album in a format you love already, then this SACD is worth considering.

The problem with this SHM-SACD is similar to about 70% of the other SHM-SACD releases I've purchased. It just sounds flat. This is not what this album sounds like. It is The Who at their most explosive. Even the video of the recording of Baba O'Reily on "The Kids are Alright" Blu Ray sounds better than this. It is almost as if there is a level of compression here that holds the sound back from it's normal impact. The Dynamic Range Database puts this SACD at between 9 (not great) and 11 (also not great.) There are recordings of The Who from earlier years such as Tommy and Quadrophonia, which both sound better. Anyway, this is a great album, but the sound of this SACD is less than optimal.

Very good sounding SACD of this album

This SACD is likely as good as this album will ever sound. If you, like me have a personal affinity for this recording it is worth owning in this release The recording itself does not sound to be of the very highest quality, such as what you will hear on some SACDs. But it sounds dramatically better than the Imagine SACD release by SHM. Of the John Lennon songs, "I'm Losing You" sounds the best. Songs like "(Just Like) Starting Over" and "Watching the Wheels" suffer a bit in terms of audio quality because of the heavier production and Lennon's love of effects on his voice.

Yoko Ono continues to be absolutely horrible, perhaps the worst thing I've ever heard in the field referred to as "music" which is a questionable term in the context of her performances. Just awful. But, if you want to hear horrible singing in high resolution, this is is probably your new reference disc...

Excellent SACD

I bit the bullet and bought this awhile ago but I can honestly say I am very glad I picked it up. First off, it's the Stones so we are not talking Steely Dan production but for how it was recorded it sounds great. This is my favourite Stones record and the sound improvement over the currently over compressed red book version. It also has a thicker sound (Much better bottom end). You can also hear a bit more separation between instruments. If you are a major fan of this album you will totally hear were the extra money went!

Excellent master of LP version

Just a note to warn people that this and the SHM CD are mastered from the original LP not the CD. This means you get edited versions of So Far Away, Money For Nothing, Why Worry, and Your Latest Trick.

Personally I like having both versions, and this is a really good master of a classic album.

Sound Quality is Not an Upgrade

Very disappointing sound quality for a limited playback SACD that cannot be ripped and played back from a hard drive. The sound is thin and tin-like with little dynamic range or depth even on the base and low synth.

This SACD has hiss on every song. The background hiss is so loud on the first song that I closed my windows because I assumed there was noise outside. It was not outside. The noise came from the speakers. Don't spend the money on this CD. If you have the record, that is about the best sound you are going to get unless or until someone decides to do a remaster. It is too bad. I have been waiting for the Nice classics.

EXCELLENT

This single layer release demonstrates the excellence possible with this format. The piano really is realistic and despite very good bass extension those lower notes are tight and do not over dominate. During the orchestral sections the textures are amazing and with the slow tempo it sounds emotional. The sound stage and depth is well balanced giving a good sense of spatial accuracy in the placing of the performers. This represents a significant advance upon the two MFSL CD versions and has the warmth of MFSL LP. A bounce that will interest collectors' are the inserts that I have not seen since the original release of this Album. Worth the price and will quickly go out of print.

The Allman Brothers Band - Beginnings- Stereo 2014

My first version that I had was the original cassette in 1973. I knew of the two albums but as my budget then and now, a two for one is always hard to beat. This 2014 Japanese reissue is good but not fantastic. I will say honestly because of the older recordings the first in 69 and the second in 70 and this reissue double disc 1973 it could be by the time it gets to 2014 that it is not as sonically brilliant as I wanted it to be. I have been listening to this my whole life and as great as this single disc is, fantastic stereo balance, vocals are front center including Gregg's organ comes center when he sings which is quite nice, you know Duane is on the left and Dickey is on the right. Great kick drum presence throughout. I am not dissapointed, just that it is not what I would expect from an SHM SACD. Packaging: I can never say how much I love these little Japanese boxes with mini versions of actual original LP's. Glad I have added this to my library.

Queen - Flash Gordon Japanese Import SHM SACD

Queen's Flash Gordon, Original Motion Picture Soundtrack SHM SACD Stereo Only. This 2011 remaster of original 1980 recording is a novelty disc at best. Fun to hear the soundtrack with clips of movie audio dialogue here and there, lots of synth and laser sounds and of course the Queens single of Flash Gordon. This SHM SACD to my surprise is not really that good. A little flat, balance is a tiny bit left sided, sounds do whip back and forth between speakers. I had to turn up my sub to get the feel I wanted to. Packaging is plastic square cornered jewel case, disc does have the top side with the Japanese special green ink called Onsho Shiyou. Small mini booklet that does have remaster credits, etc. There are 18 tracks on disc, with two of them being actual songs with Lyrics. Fun little novelty disc but I certainly won't wear it out.

Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic Japanese Import SHM SACD DSD Stereo 2014

My first ownership of this 1974 release. Stereo Sonics: Listened to it on the louder side. I felt no need to trim any bass, treble, or sub. Great stereo balance between right and left, no one side ever overpowers the other. Disc is clean and has depth. Performance: Hmm, well, looking forward to the other Steely Dan discs I have ordered. Outside of the one radio hit it was a little lackluster for me. Probably if I had purchased this LP in 74 and listened to it multiple times I would have a better appreciation for it. Packaging: I ALWAYS love the Japanese SHM SACD little boxes, with the great inner contents, not much to pull out of this except track list and lyrics in English. In the end of course I am glad I own such a fine recording of music but won't wear it out, that's for sure.

As close to a perfect rock album as there is!

Marc Bolan mirrored his friendly rival David Bowie -- and the two worked together a few times, including a bootleg hotel tape -- by transforming himself every album over his golden period into a new and forward-looking version. Boppin' elf to Tiny bopper to even a punk version . . . he was the man who "if you gave him a C chord, could write a million songs." And how he did! Done in by a car crash -- as he himself predicted, modeling a 50s idol who did the same, and hinting in his lyrics -- Marc left behind a legacy that sweeps up every scrap to release to his myriad fans. Yet this was his peak moment: seemingly stripped bare, occasionally ornated by strings, but ever driven by his gift of exquisite song-writing. Given the muddy versions endlessly released, I can't wait to hear this version -- Marc's ELECTRIC WARRIOR deserves the full audiophile treatment, and I predict this will sell out before it is even released! Get now, or get a second mortgage to find it later!

Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair SHM-SACD

Is it pop jazz, pop rock, or pop pop? All of the above. Great album, actually quite complex in arrangements. This SHM-SACD, stereo only, is superb. The synth sound comes across pure and alive in this disc format. I do not believe it could sound better on vinyl. Packaging is great, little box, plastic cover, great mini original LP cover, etc. A disc like this is the reason I don't own a turntable and I am glad I don't. When others talk about the "Big 80's Sound" this disc is one of that they are referring to.

Worth buying the SMH compared to Hannibal's release?

5 Stars
Posted by Anonymous

Before I ordered this single-layer I listened to the Hannibal CD release -- hmm, I thought, do I really need an expensive SMH? The song I really cared about, "A Sailor's Life" -- a tour de force of folk rock -- sounded great.

Sure, it also has "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," but did that justify buying the SMH for those two songs? Compared to later recordings by the band, the whole album is a bit proto-folk and a bit of a crude throw-back to the album before it.

Well, I took the plunge, and can say: YES! Not only is "A Sailor's Life" more present and clearer, but parts of the Hannibal release that sounded a bit hissy or distant are totally absent on this disk: high quality from start to finish!

I'll still only really listen to it for "A Sailor's Life" and "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," but I feel they are the best audio versions available! And that's worth it.

Cream - Goodbye SHM-SACD

5 Stars
Posted by Mark Powers

For some reason always has been my favorite Cream album. Japanese SHM-SACD packaging is great, with mini exact replica of original album. Liner notes in Japanese and track listings and lyrics in English. This release has great sound quality even from a gritty original recording and live recordings. 2 channel, stereo only, no outtakes or mono tracks as there is with Disraeli Gears. Cream albums do not shine like the glam and gloss of other high end reissues. The early recordings are just too gritty, which is the point, right? However this disc reissue is worth the cost as the reissue here does clear up some unwanted noise.

Leon Russell - Leon Russell SHM-SACD

Easy listening and calming release from Leon. This 2 channel stereo (right-left-sub only)is clean with no noise during or between tracks. Regarding who played what on what tracks there is no information. The rear of original cover says "This album is dedicated to": and the list of musicians, Clapton, Starr, Harrison, etc. Not sure if this means they actually played on album or it is acknowledgement of inspiration? SHM-SACD packaging is great with mini versions of original cover, sleeve, includes Japanese liner notes in Japanese but song lyrics are in English. Solid remaster that sounds great.

Countdown To Ecstasy Japanese Import SACD

Great Import SACD and packaging, only regret is I can't read Japanese, looks like they have a lot to say. This 2 channel stereo (right-left-sub) disc sounds great. Sound quality is clear, crisp, and well balanced. I did turn down my sub a hair as it started off a little too bassy from my usual setting. Very full sound across the front. I have never owned this Steely Dan disc and now I am glad I do, well worth the price.
