Seemingly snake-bit from the start, Big Star's pure creative side exploded with their first two albums, both of which would eventually become icons of American Power Pop. This Memphis foursome, originally founded by Chris Bell in 1971 and joined shortly thereafter by the legendary chameleon Alex Chilton, would suffer due to personnel issues and distribution problems by their label, delaying their place in musical history. One of the ultimate cult bands in popular music, #1 Record and Radio City would both influence artists-to-come such as Tom Petty, R.E.M., The Replacements and The Bangles, to name just a few. Both titles placed within Rolling Stone magazine's poll of The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time.

Brilliant album and great sound, but disappointing pressing posted on 01/20/2010

Big Star were a fantastic band that received far less attention than they deserved. I'm glad "That 70s Show" generated interest in their music. In my opinion, #1 Record is a bit better that Radio City, though they are both incredible.

As for my review of this LP, the sonics are great, as are most Classic Records LPs. However, also like most Classic Records LPs, the pressing quality was a disappointment. It seems like they put a great deal of work into their records, from obtaining the rights to some all-time great albums to doing a fantastic job with the mastering. What I can't understand is why Classic Records seem incapable of producing a flat record with an adequately-sized spindle hole and a minimum of manufacturing defects. If you're going to charge as much as, say, Mobile Fidelity, then your quality control should match that of Mobile Fidelity! I suppose as long as I and others buy their records, not much will change.
