The vocal group Vox Silentii (Johanna Korhonen and Hilkka-Liisa Vuori) was founded in 1992. The duo performs mostly prayer songs based on the Christian Church tradition. The singers believe that the human voice is a bridge to a world you cannot see and the heavenly connection gives you silence and peace. Vox Silentii was originally a three members group, but stepped down to two members a couple of years ago. The members have for years been involved in exploring Medieval culture, religiosity and liturgical songs. They give training courses in Medieval song and they do a lot of concerts both in Finland and abroad. They’ve also done a remarkable work trying to rediscover and revitalise the old lullaby song tradition. Every training course in that field has been tremendously popular among young Finnish mothers who want to learn how to sing real lullabies as their grandmothers (and the mothers before them) did! This CD is recorded in the Naantali Church outside Turku in the South-Western part of Finland. The acoustics in that particular church form – together with the human voice – a atmosphere of silent, intense praying. The works on the record are dedicated to women saints who lived in various epochs. These chants are about people’s veneration of the saint and respect for her achievements. Women saints are used as role models in prayers, in daily life and in relation to various of life’s choices. For us today, the songs offer an insight into the religious experiences of people of past times.
