"…The previously unreleased material and alternate takes are fascinating, but the reason to get Brick is the consistently successful and thrilling multichannel mixes, which are the best I've heard." – Kalman Rubinson, Stereophile, February 2007

Formed in the mid-70's by art school chums David Byrne, Chris Franz, and Tina Weymouth-and ex-Modern lover Jerry Harrison-Talking Heads rose out of the CBGB punk crucible and proved themselves one of the most artistically adventurous and influential bands ever. Their visionary, polyrhyhmic sound fused elements including rock, funk, and punk with diverse world beats, avant-garde minimalism, and pure pop genius. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the band and their groundbreaking repertoire are celebrated in this deluxe DualDisc upgrade of their catalog. Now their critically praised recordings can be reexperienced as never before, with new DVD-A Surround mixes personally supervised by Jerry Harrison.

Back in May, I was somewhat hesitant to embrace Dual Disc (surround sound that was less than stellar on some early releases). Lately, I've noticed that more Dual Disc releases have offered high resolution and high quality surround while offering great stereo mixes of the same title. After I listened to this, I don't know how I ever did without my Dual Disc! You simply won't believe the quality in both stereo and surround. If the rating system went higher, I'd give this even more stars. Seriously, people it's that good. If you're a Talking Heads fan, you've GOT to have this. If you're a fan of surround, you don't just want this, you need it. Lots of fun extras. Come on Blondie, do something like this with your catalogue.

I would have preferred these releases in SACD format but the Dual Disk format works very well. I was surprised at how the 5.1 mixes worked with the earlier material. I expected Remain in Light to be excellent and it is, but the 5.1 mix of More Songs About ... also works well. The only sonic flaw is the lack of bass definition on most of the releases. This may very well be a limitation of the source material but a little bit of punch would have been nice. As for the video related material it's okay but I bought the "brick" for the audio.

One could assert that this music was made for surround sound as the surround mixes transform a mere 'listen' into an 'experience'. The productions are not 'over EQ'd' or 'loud'. Dual-disc offerings often skimp on the available formats offered, but not with these discs - the full complement is included here - advanced resoulution for dvd-audio, dolby for dvd, and the cd side for cd players. Interesting artwork accompanies each track, and the menus navigate in a logical manner. If all remastering efforts were to exibit similar success, that would be 'heaven'.

When this came out, there was a great uproar about the release on Dual Disc format; many consumers complained they could not play the CD level. I didn't buy it for that very reason, and also regretted as did others that it was not released on SACD or DVD-A: what a waste of time and effort to release it on such a stupid format. When I saw the two reviews above, I assumed the problems had been fixed and so bought it. I was wrong. I tried the CD discs on two players: my $10,000 Naim CD and an $850 Denon Universal Player, that does universally play everything. Neither of them could play a single CD. It is scandalous that this product is still being sold, since both the label and the retailers know about what is a well-documented, pervasive problem. At the least, there should be a prominent warning, but the better approach is to refuse to sell it at all and force the label to fix the problem.
