Containing the monster hit "Take Five," Time Out firmly establishes the Dave Brubeck Quartet outside of the jazz world. This seminal recording is highlighted by the moody arrangements and saxophone work of Paul Desmond.

2.   Strange Meadow Lark
3.   Take Five
4.   Three To Get Ready
5.   Kathy's Waltz

"Time Out" is a classic. I have three pressings of it plus a high resolution CD. This is definitely the best. You can hear all parts of the music more clearly from the deep bass notes to the cymbols and the wind instruments in between. Plus, the percussion is amazing. It's a bit of a pain having 4 single-sided LP's running at 45 RPM; but it's well worth it for sonic experience. Next to "Kind of Blue" and "The Koln Conecert" (I have a German pressing of the latter), this is my favorite jazz album.

To do any better than this, you'd have to steal the master tape. Not that you would need to - this is probably the finest rendition of Time Out sonically speaking. Having this album spread across four single-sided LPs cut at 45 RPM also means you'd have to keep changing records every few minutes... but the amazing dynamic range and sheer realism and level of detail are worth the extra effort. Savor it as you would your favorite exotic spirit of choice. Vinyl surface is pitch black quiet too. A definite winner all around.

Who said sonics are inversely proportional to artistic performanc? Well, Mr J.Gordon Holt you were right, but this is one notable exception. If you think youve heard this album before, you're possibly 85% right. We need a 6-star rating for this issue. It is the state of the art and proof of 45RPM is the speed for serious dynamics. Lower the stylus and hold on to your seat.
