There really are very few records of any genre that truly deserve to be called a Masterpiece. However, Layla is worthy. There haven’t been many finer or better-respected albums. Clapton and his talented cohorts, including Duane Allman, performed under the pseudonym Derek & The Dominos because Clapton wanted to escape the superstardom his name had become through Blind Faith and Cream. Layla is a record based on pure emotion. Clapton was hopelessly in love with Patti Boyd, the wife of his best friend, George Harrison. The epic title track is a pleading ode to Patti, whom Clapton eventually married.

Layla Let Down, Again posted on 12/20/2004

| Being an Eric Clapton fan, and remembering Layla as probably the all time best rock song ever, I have purchased box sets with re-mixes of the Layla album, out takes, everything! I was so hopeful this would indeed be the SACD disc to die for, was I ever wrong!
Unlike the new Tommy release in SACD, Layla is as dry and dead as it ever was. It sounded like it was recorded in a garage when it was first released, and it sounds that way now. I was truly amazed how bad it is. If you have not already spent the money on the Eric Clapton boxed set with all the out takes from the Layla sessions, go ahead and purchase this SACD. If you have the boxed CD set, save your money, you won't get any audio revelation here!

Better than the CD, but no better than the record you remember posted on 01/20/2008

| This is, of course, a giant of an album, but I don't think, upon listening to the SACD, that the guys used the best recording equipment at the time. This doesn't suffer from the bright, grainy sound of a CD, or the pops of an LP, but it still suffers from a the less than best tape recorder they must have used. Buy it, but don't expect a miracle.
