The Great Jazz Trio is a name which pianist Hank Jones reserves for very special projects on which the artists truly deserve the name “great.” On this album, Hank is accompanied by bassist Richard Davis and his younger brother, drummer Elvin Jones. This is a dream team for jazz lovers. While the tunes are mostly classic standards, the group’s interplay is fresh and stimulative with full confidence and commitment. The album opens with “Caravan” which is an alternative take to the version on Autumn Leaves. It is surprising to know that brothers Hank and Elvin have recorded together very infrequently during their long careers, but on this album they feature another sibling — the late Thad Jones — by playing Thad’s composition, “A Child Is Born.”
