Norah Jones's debut on Blue Note is a mellow, acoustic pop affair with soul and country overtones, immaculately produced by the great Arif Mardin. (It's pretty much an open secret that the 22-year-old vocalist and pianist is the daughter of Ravi Shankar.) Jones is not quite a jazz singer, but she is joined by some highly regarded jazz talent: guitarists Adam Levy, Adam Rogers, Tony Scherr, Bill Frisell, and Kevin Breit; drummers Brian Blade, Dan Rieser, and Kenny Wolleson; organist Sam Yahel; accordionist Rob Burger; and violinist Jenny Scheinman. Her regular guitarist and bassist, Jesse Harris and Lee Alexander, respectively, play on every track and also serve as the chief songwriters. Both have a gift for melody, simple yet elegant progressions, and evocative lyrics. (Harris made an intriguing guest appearance on Seamus Blake's Stranger Things Have Happened.) Jones, for her part, wrote the title track and the pretty but slightly restless "Nightingale." She also includes convincing readings of Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart," J.D. Loudermilk's "Turn Me On," and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You." There's a touch of Rickie Lee Jones in Jones's voice, a touch of Bonnie Raitt in the arrangements; her youth and her piano skills could lead one to call her an Alicia Keys for grown-ups. While the mood of this record stagnates after a few songs, it does give a strong indication of Jones' alluring talents. - David R. Adler

In 2003, Norah Jones took home eight Grammy wins, including four of the evening's top awards. Jones was named best new artist, and her song "Don't Know Why" received the record of the year, song of the year, and best female pop performance awards. Her album Come Away With Me was named album of the year, best pop album, vocal, best engineered album, non-classical, and received a producer of the year award for Arif Mardi.

Norah shines on 200g vinyl posted on 03/06/2005

While this is an excellent recording when listened to on a plain old CD, hearing Norah Jones' breathy voice lilt and smolder on a hot slab of wax is an aural experience that no one with a turntable should allow themselves to miss. Norah's wispy, trancendant falsettos suffer none of the high-frequency distortion common to digital formats, and the lows resonate deeply and cleanly. Not only that, but this record plays with a clarity that is almost digital-like in its quality: you need to listen VERY closely to hear any of the typical noise problems associated with the vinyl record format.

The most impressive quality of this record, however, is Ms. Jones' ability to transcend genres and appeal to almost anyone's musical tastes. Each of the songs on this album is instantly listenable, whether your musical preference ranges from Soul to Jazz to Country to Pop.

In short, this is a beautiful album, made even more so by the superb 200g repressing. A must for anyone's collection.

The depth on the Vinyl changed my opinion on the entire recording and the performer herself. I should know better, but it still surprises me how much you gain in analog.

Others have clearly stated the case, but if you still have any reservations on buying this version, you will be amazed!! I just received the second issue after a long backorder.

An otherwise competent pressing marred by sibilants.

A New Album, Compared to the CD posted on 01/28/2008

Why am I reiterating what others have said?

Because I agree so passionately, that I would feel guilty if I didn't offer my voice.

Folks, this is simply a different experience than the CD version, more so than any other CD vs. vinyl comparison I've heard. The bass pulls your heart in time, the guitars shine with a newfound clarity, and that VOICE!

I was so enamoured with her second album that I forgot all about this gem until I heard it again on vinyl. I imagine that Norah fans who religiously listen to this CD will almost pass out with excitement! What a pity that "Feels Like Home" wasn't mastered with this sort of clarity :-(

Buy this!

Pretty good first album. Her voice is sweet. The lp quality is good. It did not make me want to get her sophomore album though which is supposedly better. In my mind I am comparing this to The best of Diana Krall rightly or wrongly and the latter is a magnitude better.

This is most likely the best sounding LP I own as of yet. The music is beautiful and the pressing is as quiet as they come! Let's all hope that Ms. Jones can match this release one day soon and that is it recorded, engineered, produced, and pressed at this extraordinary level! Space, depth, and a level of sensuality that you won't soon forget!

I have the SACD of this - compared to this vinyl edition, the SACD is sorely lacking. The vinyl album has a much richer tone and the overall presentation has a much larger presence in my listening room.

Just listened to this again as I was going through my collection. This is a very good pressing and obvioulsy an amazing performance. Nora is right in the room with me. Impressive.

You won't want to listen to a digital copy of this album after you listen to this wonderful pressing. If any record can convince the layman of vinyl's virtues over shiny polycarbonate, this is it. The warmth, the nuances of Norah's voice is enough to make your eyes misty. I can only hope we see more audiophile pressings of Norah's albums in the future.

The cd recording has been one of our favorite albums for a while, and we decided to buy the lp after reading so many reviews. Sit down with a glass of wine and enter your own personal nightclub with Norah Jones - you will NOT be disappointed!!!

Really nice recording, maybe a bit too bright. Definitely an upgrade over the CD. Very happy with the purchase.
