Recorded live, and cut direct-to-acetate, from Third Man Records

The Kills, all-new live record, from Jack White's Third Man Records. Third Man is releasing live records from The Shins, The Kills and blues legend Seasick Steve, all recorded, without any overdubs or editing, in Third Man's Blue Room in Nashville last October, using the direct-to-acetate recording method. They were mixed in real time on a Rupert Neve 5008 console by Grammy-winning engineer Vance Powell, and cut instantly to lacquer using a 1953 Scully Lathe formerly employed by Cincinnati's King Records.

We at Acoustic Sounds applaud Third Man for these direct-to-disc sessions. We’ve been cutting direct-to-disc since 2000.  Now we press at our own pressing plant, Quality Record Pressings, with lacquers plated by Gary Salstrom. Our D2D LPs are mixed live by recording engineer Katsuhiko Naito on a Neve 5106 console, and our lacquers are cut by well-known mastering engineer Kevin Gray, using a Neumann VMS 70 with Ortofon cutting system. When Third Man says their Blue Room is the only live venue with direct-to-acetate capabilities, we’ll pardon the oversight and just note our direct-to-disc LPs recorded at Blue Heaven Studios are available here. https://store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm?get=results&CategoryID=20&LabelID=459.

This record captures a show from The Kills sought by Third Man since day Numero Uno. Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart are two of the most talented and creative musicians around and they rocked the Third Man stage. These eight songs were recorded direct-to-acetate on October 10, 2012.

"The good people at Third Man believe that this new/old method of recording is as honest as it gets," according to company representatives. "bringing listeners as close to the experience of the performance as possible."
