New transparent "Skeleton remote" with volume and mute includedStereophile - 2017 500 Recommended Components

Rogue Audio is pleased to announce that their best selling Sphinx got a facelift!  The stylish groove in the faceplate commemorates this latest technical revision.

The new Sphinx v2 will includes:

  • Improved 1W headphone circuit
  • Improved phono circuit with 6dB additional gain (same phono as Cronus II)
  • Addition of a mute function on the new “Skeleton remote"
  • Lower noise floor

Dynamic, transparent, and profoundly musical, the Rogue Sphinx sets a new standard in affordable integrated amplifiers. Utilizing sophisticated circuitry borrowed from our most advanced designs, the Sphinx is able to outperform separates costing far more than this single box design. And with 100 watts of hybrid power, this integrated is capable of realistic volume levels that will rival the clarity and presence of the original performance.

The Sphinx contains a discrete headphone amplifier and an excellent phono section compatable with high output MM and MC cartridges. Active and variable outputs allow for the addition of a subwoofer or other outboard devices. A high capacity linear power supply provides tremendous energy storage to recreate the deepest bass passages while various regulated power supply stages provide ultra smooth sound in the midrange and treble. The machined aluminum faceplate is available in either black or silver to compliment the rest of your components and the optional metal remote further adds the convenience of remote volume operation.

Nice Sounding Amp.

I upgraded to this amp from a Yamaha AS-500, which was no slouch considering its price. This amp delivers more detail and dynamics than the Yamaha, but with a slight loss of rhythm on fast paced songs. Acoustical recordings is where this amp really shines. The onboard phono preamp is good but I think my Parasound Z-Phono would prove close in performance. It's possibly even better than the Sphinx, but like the Yamaha, the Z-phono "punches well above it's weight." I have the Rogue paired with some Monitor Audio Silver 8s (4 ohm) and it drives them well. My only complaint about the Rogue is the cheap feeling "skeleton" remote and subpar binding posts, but they get the job done. Apparently this is where they chose to cut costs, better than skimping on the circuitry. Thanks to Chad Stelly for recommending this great piece of gear.

Very good stuff

Have about 150 hours on this integrated amp and been playing it through a pair of Vandersteen Model 2CE Signature II speakers and couldn't be happier with it. It performs as advertised. From vinyl, SACD, and CD, they all sound great. Will be putting a DAC on is soon and I am sure I'll be equally pleased with that. You are not going to replace $10k worth of gear with this box, but if you are buying separates, you'll spend double at least. These hybrid designs are really hard to beat. I could see a Pharaoh one day in the not so distant future.
