John Gary Williams, with his honey-sweet vocals, rose to fame as the lead voice of the inimitable Stax group The Mad Lads, who scored with the hit "Don't Have To Shop Around." In 1973, Williams emerged from hiatus to embark upon a solo career and he released his reflective, poignant and politically conscious, self-titled debut album.

By the time that John Gary Williams recorded this album for Stax he was one of the label's veterans, having been signed as a member of the Mad Lads since the middle of the mid-'60s. Now remembered as the home of soul dance, "The Whole Damn World Is Going Crazy" is a fantastic piece of southern soul showcasing John Gary's voice on an album's worth of largely down-tempo material.
