Recorded live, and cut direct-to-acetate, from Third Man Records

The Shins, all-new live record, from Jack White's Third Man Records. Third Man is releasing live records from The Shins, The Kills and blues legend Seasick Steve, all recorded, without any overdubs or editing, in Third Man's Blue Room in Nashville last October, using the direct-to-acetate recording method. They were mixed in real time on a Rupert Neve 5008 console by Grammy-winning engineer Vance Powell, and cut instantly to lacquer using a 1953 Scully Lathe formerly employed by Cincinnati's King Records.

We at Acoustic Sounds applaud Third Man for these direct-to-disc sessions. We’ve been cutting direct-to-disc since 2000.  Now we press at our own pressing plant, Quality Record Pressings, with lacquers plated by Gary Salstrom. Our D2D LPs are mixed live by recording engineer Katsuhiko Naito on a Neve 5106 console, and our lacquers are cut by well-known mastering engineer Kevin Gray, using a Neumann VMS 70 with Ortofon cutting system. When Third Man says their Blue Room is the only live venue with direct-to-acetate capabilities, we’ll pardon the oversight and just note our direct-to-disc LPs recorded at Blue Heaven Studios are available here. https://store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm?get=results&CategoryID=20&LabelID=459.

As to this album, what can be said about The Shins that hasn't already been said in miles of press? They're one of the best bands out there today and it's still a thrill thinking back to the night James Mercer and his band performed at Third Man Records live. The eight tracks on this live recording mark Third Man's first ever cut live direct-to-acetate, and you'll be pleased with how they turned out.

Poor live recording regardless of Direct to Disc

This is the only live Shins I know of, so was very excited to get it, especially given the vaunted direct to disc recording. Seems like it was a great show, but the recording completely fails to pick up the energy - the room sounds cavernous and dead. For the price, I think its a good value and I really enjoy having a live Shins recording. but, any well record live CD blows this away.
