How does one follow-up two consecutive Stereophile Magazine "Records To Die For"? With a Stereophile "Recording of the Month," of course. Companion, Vocalist/pianist/composer Patricia Barber's first live record, did just that (Jan. 2000, Stereophile). Those who attended Hi-Fi '99 in Chicago were already in the know as Ms. Barber's three appearances happened just eight weeks prior to the Companion recording. Of Ms. Barber's live performances, The New York Times said "a knockout...Ms. Barber's style suggest an intensely romantic spirit examining itself through a microscope." DownBeat Magazine gave Companion 4-1/2 stars (following modern cool's 5 stars) saying "the sound of this recording is extraordinary...engineer Jim Anderson gets not only the band but the electric night air." Stereophile simply said "Ms. Barber is an emerging star." Patricia Barber, vocal, piano, Hammond B-3; Michael Arnopol, bass; John McLean, guitar; Eric Montzka, drum, percussion; Ruben P. Alvarez, percussion, Jason Narducy, guest vocalist. "The Beat Goes On," "Use Me," "Like JT," "Let It Rain," "Touch of Trash," "If This Isn't Jazz," "Black Magic Woman."
The HQ180 gram vinyl version leaves off Ms. Barber's "Touch of Trash" but leaves in all the originality, emotion and addictive power of a Barber Performance.
