Two names in particular spring to mind in connection with Steely Dan: Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The two men discovered while at college at the end of the Sixties that they shared musical tastes, although they played in different bands. They subsequently formed a songwriter duo before making their breakthrough in 1972 under the name Steely Dan (a name which came from William Burrough's novel The Naked Lunch) with their debut album Can't Buy A Thrill. This LP remained for over a year in the Billboard charts, and the single taken from the album, Do It Again, leaped into the Top Ten. This was just the beginning of an extraordinarily successful career which lasted until the temporary disbandment of the group in 1981 (a brand new album entitled Two Against Nature has appeared since then). Every one of their seven studio albums was crowned with a Gold or Platinum Disc. Can't Buy A Thrill is not as polished as later albums, such as Aja or Gaucho for example, but their inimitable mixture of melodic rock, shot through with soul, jazzy rhythms and ambitious instrumental solos made Fagen and Becker stand out from all the others right from the very start. Apart from the now classic songs such as Dirty Work, Midnight Cruiser, Reelin' The Years and of course the unforgettable Do It Again, it goes without saying that all the others titles are endowed with all those qualities which make Steely Dan so unique. If you can get beyond the constant crackle of the surface noise, this is a wonderful album. If you want quality sound, you'd better consider waiting until sacd is released.

Sounds Good On First Listen, But...

Ive had this for over a week now and it sounded great to begin with... quiet vinyl and all but once I had a chance to compare its popular tracks to Steely Dans' "Gold" (Hits)Cd, it doesnt hold up. It should never be the case that a cd sounds better than the vinyl especially when the cd tracks its compared to are from a greatest hits compilation. Sadly this is the case though. This mastering job flat out sucks. Its not that it sounds distorted, on the contrary what is on the record sounds very good. Its whats not on the record that is the major issue here.

So many of the reissue albums that have come out recently just haven't got that good sound quality that make you want to listen with enjoyment. Too many disappointments being sold for this day and age of technology. This one is not a disappointment. Overall balance of sound is there. Very quiet vinyl. You will be very happy with this one.

I have nothing but high praise for this remaster. Fabulous sound all around. Actually, I think this repro comes closer to the real thing than Cisco's Aja release does to my original first pressing of Aja. Buy this album.

I never had this album "back in the day" when it was out new, even though I was a big Dan fan. The albums I have been most exposed to were "The Royal Scam" and "Aja," which I absolutely love. From this album, there are the classics: "Reelin' In The Years," "Dirty Work," and of course, "Do It Again," which unfortunately get way too much play on classic rock radio. But I never heard anything else on this album (I know, for shame!) This, then, is a wonderful opportunity to go back and experience Steely Dan at its onset, with great songwriting and musicianship. Although I don't feel this album has the same continuity and consistency of writing that "Scam" and "Aja" have, there are some really great tunes here. The sound on this recording is fantastic; I have never had any of the ABC re-issues before, but it's really nice quality heavy vinyl, with great frequency range and imaging. If you've never heard "Do It Again" on quality vinyl, you've never really heard it!

WHAT IF FAGEN ISN`T THE SINGER?

WHAT I REALLY WANTED TO HAVE IN MY TABLE WAS "AJA" (SOMEDAY I WILL). I DIDN`T KNOW THIS IS DAN`S FIRST RECORDING. DISPITE THAT THEIR SO UNIQUE/SPECIAL STYLE (THE BEST OF THEM FOR ME) IS ALREADY THERE. THE ONLY THING IS THAT I SKEEP THE SONGS WHERE FAGEN IS NOT THE SINGER CAUSE THAT STYLE IS NOT THERE AND SOUNDS LIKE COMMON BALADS. THE SOUND? ALL WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT BUT I´M REFILLING MY CLEANNING WEAPONS `CAUSE IM GOING FOR PREOWNED BETTER.
