Altoist Ornette Coleman's first Atlantic recording was his first with his somewhat revolutionary quartet, which included cornetist Don Cherry, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins. Because the solos did not follow any set chord pattern, this music became known as "free jazz." Highlighted by Coleman's most famous composition, Lonely Woman, plus PeaceCongeniality. This music would greatly influence jazz of the mid-'60s and still sounds quite advanced.
