SHM-SACD (Super High Material SACD) is the ultimate Super Audio CD that utilizes the materials and technologies that were developed for the SHM-CD to further enhance the audio-resolution. These discs are made with polycarbonate developed for the screen of the liquid crystal display. As it has a higher transparency, players can read the signal more faithfully. Also, it excels in fluidity, which enables you to cast a more accurate pit. What works wonders for a low resolution format such as CD should offer even greater sonic improvements in a real high resolution format such as SACD.

- Two-channel SACD layer only, to secure enough reflectance and not to compress DSD file.
- Label of the disc is printed with a special green ink called 'Onsho Shiyou,' which minimizes diffuse reflection.
- Carefully selected master audio is used, from existing DSD files to newly converted from analog tapes.

Like the band's previous two released, Cream's third album, Wheels Of Fire (1968), also topped the charts. Although it was criticized at the time for being a somewhat disjointed album, divided into one LP of new studio material and one LP of live material, it redeems itself because "White Room" has gone down in the annals as one of the great moments in Rock and Roll.

I bought the vinyl LP when it first came out in 1968, and I also own the 1992 DCC 24-karat Gold CD reissue (mastered by Steve Hoffman), so I know this album very well.

I decided to pay the $60 for this Japanese "SHM-SACD" version just to see how it stacks up.

This Japanese "SHM-SACD" of Wheels of Fire absolutely trounces all previous versions I have listened to. The highs are very smooth and the bass/low-mid region is fuller. I'm actually hearing details in the bass guitar and percussion that I had not heard before. Vocals and guitar are also improved. From the first notes of White Room, you WILL sit-up and take notice (live tracks were also excellent). It would not surprise me if the SACD master was made using tube equipment.

I no longer own the original 1968 LP, but I do have Eric Clapton's "Crossroads" box set on LP. On the Wheels of Fire tracks, this Japanese "SHM-SACD" rules!

All tracks are on one disc, and you must have an SACD player (there is no CD layer).
