When Nick Cave put the Bad Seeds on temporary hiatus, he formed Grinderman with Warren Ellis, Jim Sdavunos and Martyn Casey - all members of his primary outfit. They were the mirror image of the Bad Seeds: irreverent, hard rocking and just plain fun. They issued their self-titled debut album, a crunchy, howling slab of grit, grime, sleazy humor, swampy shambolic blues and high-octane garage band energy. Grinderman 2 is another step in that direction. Cave's songwriting goes further into the blackly humorous and the band's sound evolves. All the original trademarks are there: the cacophonous piano, howling guitars and electric mandolins, sawing violins, low-end basslines and cracking, clamorous beats, rooted in basic roar and roll.
